Patriots blank host Southside

MUNCIE — A couple of three-set wins finished off a shutout victory for the Patriots.
Miranda Reinhart and the team of Alicia Degler and Kyla McKibben each won in three sets Thursday as the Jay County High School girls tennis team blanked the Muncie Southside Rebels 5-0.
Jessica Ooten led the way for the Patriots (3-4) with a shutout win over Kayla Butler at No. 2 singles. She is now 6-1 on the year.
Reinhart topped Marie Johnson 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 at No. 3 singles and McKibben and Degler beat Jadelyn Reed and Elizabeth Allison 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 at No. 1 doubles. Alyssa Rigby defeated Megan Fields 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, and Mackenzie McIntire and Brittany Stevens fought off Kacie Johnson and Becky Mann 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) in the No. 2 doubles match.
Jay County dominated the junior varsity match for a 9-1 win with shutout victories from Melinda Penrod, Avery Loyd, Jill Dirksen and Michelle Wellman.

Mathias eagles No. 7
BLUFFTON — Evan Mathias recorded the first eagle of his high school career, but the Jay County boys golf team lost 188-191 to the Bluffton Tigers at Timber Ridge Golf Club.
Mathias parred four of the first five holes at Timber Ridge and then turned in the highlight of the evening. His eagle came  on the 475-yard, par 5 seventh hole as he earned medalist honors with a 41.
Justen Keller followed with a 49, and Dylan Friddle was the only Patriot other than Mathias to record a par as he posted a 50. Richie Carducci completed the team score with a 51, and Zach Fullenkamp shot 56.
The low score for Bluffton was a 45 from Andrew Wilson.

Jay County won the junior varsity match 222-233 with Mitchel Rigby leading the way with a 46.

JV baseball falls in 8
The Patriots rallied from a 5-2 deficit, but fell 8-7 to the visiting Wes-Del Warriors in 10 innings.
Tanner Reynolds suffered the loss for the Patriots as he started and worked three innings. Taylor Fugiett and Chaz Carroll combined to toss seven innings of relief.
Sean Winget went wild at the plate, finishing 5-for-6 with a triple, four RBIs and two runs. Wes Hibbard added a 3-for-4 effort and scored a run, and Ravi Patel and Carroll each had a single and a double.

Eagles roll to win
COWAN — West Jay Middle School’s boys track team clobbered the Cowan Blackhawks 85-15 Thursday.
Three Eagles each won a pair of events, with Andrew Trewyn taking first place in the 110-meter hurdles and the high jump. Daniel Meranda won the 100 dash and 200 dash, and Will Watson was first in the shot put and discus.
Phillip Newsome finished off the sweep of the field events by winning the long jump, and Tanner Craw took the top spot in the 400 dash.[[In-content Ad]]
