Patriots blank Rebels

MUNCIE — The Patriots’ second visit to Muncie went much better than the first.
After going 0-3 at Saturday’s Muncie Central Invitational, the Jay County High School boys tennis team returned Tuesday and halted a four-match losing streak with a 5-0 victory over the Muncie Southside Rebels.
Two of the wins for JCHS (2-5) came by shutout, with Garhett Blackford blanking Joe Stanley 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 singles. Jake Schwieterman and Evan Mathias won by the same score over Daulton Evans and Jacob Burtley at No. 2 doubles.
Josh Lykins and Zach Pryor also cruised through their match at No. 1 doubles, defeating Jasper Jameson and Caleb Wilkins 6-0, 6-2. Landry Inman won 7-5, 6-0 over Michael Morris at No. 1 singles, and Josh Martin beat Elisha North 6-3, 3-6 at No. 2 singles.
The doubles teams of Connor Daniels and Sok Vormohr, and Alex Krieg and Conner Ray, each won in junior varsity action.
Boys soccer loses
Jay County stayed within striking distance in the first half but struggled in the second in a 7-0 loss to the visiting Connersville Spartans.
Logan Nuekam led the way for Connersville (4-0), which scored five times in the second half, as he finished with a hat trick. He scored once in the first half and twice in the second.
Adding single goals apiece for the Spartans were Sadler Kleve, Robbie Marschand, Brian Hazelrigg and Andrew Stine. Jacob Hackleman had a pair of assists.
The loss dropped the Patriots to 2-3 on the season.

Girls soccer falls
HUNTINGTON — After a scoreless first half, the Patriots gave up the only goals of the game in the second in a 2-0 loss to the Huntington North Vikings.
Huntington North (1-4-1) broke the scoreless tie on a goal by Kelsey Hollowell at the 24:09 mark of the second half. Aly Grabner came up with the Vikings’ other goal with 9:05 left in the game.
Catherine Dunn took three shots on goal for the Patriots, who fell to 2-2, and Sammi Compton added two. Alex Loy and Andrea Bruggeman added one shot apiece.
Brooke Reynard finished with four saves.

Hemmelgarn leads EJ
Ivan Hemmelgarn led the East Jay Middle School football team Tuesday as it hosted the East Jay Jamboree.
Hemmelgarn tossed a 30-yard touchdown pass to Dylan Martin during the Chiefs’ quarter of play against Blackford. He also had a 5-yard TD run against West Jay.
Brian Stancliff had a 30-yard TD run against Blackford and added the two-point conversion.
Joe Holcomb, Luke Weaver and Martin all had sacks on the evening.[[In-content Ad]]
