Patriots bounce back, top Rebels (09/09/04)

MUNCIE — Now that’s more like it.

The Jay County girls golf team rebounded from a difficult Tuesday, shooting one of its better rounds for a season for a 215-237 victory over the Muncie Southside Rebels.

Freshman Trisha Champ, who picked up a third of the Patriots’ 15 penalty strokes as they shot a 235 at Portland Country Club Tuesday, came back to form with a 44. She picked up pars on the par-4 first, sixth and seventh holes, and also had four bogeys in a very consistent round.

Katey Kohler had some ups and downs, but finished with the No. 2 team score of 54. Brianne Morrical followed a rough fifth hole with a par on No. 6 on the way to a 58, and Miranda Denney parred No. 8 as she completed the team score with a 59.

Shonda Sutton came in with a 64, and Ashley Bunch shot 65.

Jay County returns to the links today to take on Delta at Portland Country Club at 4:30 p.m.

Freshman spikers fall

MUNCIE — The Jay County freshman volleyball team took to the road Wednesday to play the powerhouse Muncie Central Bearcats and came away with a 25-9, 25-21 defeat.

Shelby Rines played solid defense to finish with eight digs, and Brittany O’Dell had six digs and two points. Rines, O’Dell, Jessica Murdock, Shanda Morningstar and Sarah Mescher each had one kill.

Stephanie Wellman put up five assists, and Morningstar added two points.

EJ CC victorious

East Jay’s eighth grade boys swept the top eight spots as all three Chief cross country teams rolled over Winchester Driver Wednesday.

The eighth grade boys dominated for a 15-40 victory over Driver. The girls team won by a 19-36 count and the seventh grade boys team rolled to a 22-33 victory.

Kyle Simmons led the domination, winning the eighth grade boys race in 11-minutes, 47 seconds. He was trailed by Isaac Poole in 12:16.

Steven Kelly finish in 12:19, Jordan Moser crossed the line in 12:50 and Joey Franks completed the team score with a time of 12:54.

Chase Wellman (13:24), Phillip Powell (13:43) and Derek Bartlett (13:53) also all finished before the top Winchester runner.

Kylie Wellman paced the girls team, which took four of the top five positions. She was first in 12:42, 22 seconds ahead of Driver’s Candi Garringer.

It was all East Jay after that, with Cassie Laux and Leah Wellman each finishing in 13:53. Tiffany Helms was fifth in 14:10, and Katie Butcher placed sixth in 14:12.

Patrick Johnson won the seventh grade boys race in 12:08, and Eric Homan was third with a time of 12:58. Ben Brandt was fifth in 13:07, followed by Preston Roberts in 13:08 and Brad Horn in 13:48.

Weaver leads WJ CC

Kelly Weaver took first place as the West Jay girls cross country team grabbed a 19-36 victory over Hartford City Tuesday. The Eagle boys did not have enough runners for a team score.

Weaver finished 12 seconds ahead of the field, crossing the line in 13-minutes, 49 seconds. Kristen Selvey was second for West Jay in 14:20.

Whitney Henderson came in fourth in 15:28, followed by Brittany Burris in 15:29 and Annaliese Jetmore in 16:37.

Brady Mills led the boys team, which had just four runners, winning by more than a minute in 11:57. Jeremiah Cotherman was fourth in 13:20, Chris Mooney was sixth in 13:48 and Ty Fullenkamp was 11th in 15:41.

Chief gridders split

East Jay’s eighth grade football team took some time to get going, but caught fire in a big way for a 32-0 victory over New Castle Wednesday. The seventh grade team took a 20-14 defeat.

The Chief eighth graders went scoreless in the first quarter before getting a string of touchdown runs from five different players.

Billy Wellman got the offense going, scoring the first of two second-quarter touchdowns on a 3-yard run. Dalton McGill added a 15-yard run for a 14-0 halftime lead.

Adam Garringer increased the advantage with a 20-yard scoring run in the third quarter. Lance Franklin and Brandon Reynard added touchdown runs of 50 and 40 yards respectively in the fourth quarter for the final margin.

The seventh grade team fell behind 8-0 in the first quarter and never led. Nick Stephen put East Jay on the board with a 63-yard run in the second quarter, and Tyler Freyburgher ran in for the 2-point conversion.

Ben Vance posted the other Chief touchdown on a 41-yard run in the fourth quarter. Vance and Cody Stocker each had fumble recoveries in the contest.

EJ volley loses

The East Jay volleyball teams fell in straight games Wednesday, dropping a pair of matches to St. Joseph of Decatur. The eighth grade team lost by a 25-10, 25-6 score, while the seventh grade team fell 25-7, 25-22.

Kaelee Keller paced the Chief eighth graders with five points. Mackenzie Loy added one.

Lindsey Wellman was the top scorer for the seventh grade team with five points. Becky Muhlenkamp and Pazia Speed each added three.[[In-content Ad]]
