Patriots cruise to win over UC (09/07/06)

JCHS boys soccer

UNION CITY - Rain kept the Patriots off the field for nearly two weeks. But it didn't cause any rust.

The Jay County boys soccer team scored three times in each half as it zoomed past the Union City Indians for a 6-1 victory Wednesday.

Seniors Luke McClung and Lucas Karpe each had two assists and one goal in the victory.

McClung got the scoring started 15 minutes into the contest with a corner kick from the left side. The ball bounced off a Union City player and into the goal for a score, which was credited to Chase Ainsworth.

Karpe, a foreign exchange student from Brazil, assisted on a Scott "Scooter" Bruggeman goal 10 minutes later. Then with five minutes left in the opening half, Mason Shreve got his head on another corner kick from McClung for a 3-0 Jay County advantage.

The Patriots (3-1) extended their lead to 5-0 in the second half on a pair of goals involving Karpe. He assisted on a goal by McClung four minutes after the intermission, then scored on his own eight minutes later.

Union City finally got on the board midway through the second half, only to have Jay County almost immediately push the margin back to five goals. Derek Mills, normally the JCHS goalie, came out of the net and picked up his first goal of the season on an assist from Patrick Johnson.

Mills saved the only two shots on goal against him. Bruggeman replaced him in the box, allowing one goal on the Indians' three shots.

Jay County out-shot the Indians for the game, 16-5.[[In-content Ad]]
