Patriots crush Bluffton for sixth straight win (12/01/04)
JCHS girls basketball
BLUFFTON — On paper the game looked like it might be close. In reality, it wasn’t.
Senior Jamie Bruggeman led a big first quarter as the Jay County girls basketball team blasted the Bluffton Tigers Tuesday 57-32.
The Patriots are now 6-1, having won six in a row since dropping the season-opener at Fort Wayne South Side (4-1).
Jay County and Bluffton seemed somewhat evenly matched entering the game — Jay defeated Norwell by a three Friday, and Bluffton beat the same team by eight a week earlier. However, Bruggeman scored seven of her 12 points as the Patriots outscored the Tigers 19-8 in the opening period.
The visiting team never looked back, building a 15-point lead in at halftime. It outscored Bluffton in every quarter of the 25-point win.
Bruggeman was one of four Patriots in double-figures. Sara Garringer had a game-high 13 points, Markie Runyon scored 11 points and Renae Laux added 10 points.
Bruggeman, Garringer and Laux each hit a pair of 3-pointers, and Jay County finished 6-of-13 (46 percent) from long distance. The team was also 13-of-15 for 87 percent from the free throw line.
Runyon grabbed eight rebounds and had two assists, and Garringer notched four assists and three steals. Theresa Reinhart had four boards, and Lisa Weitzel added two assists.
Kyle Marah was the top scorer for Bluffton with nine points. Jeni Johnson had seven points, and Katie Vanderkolk added six.
Bluffton (2-3) was the third opponent this season which Jay County has held to 32 or fewer points.
The Patriots will return to action at home Saturday when they take on Union City at 1 p.m.
Junior varsity
