Patriots defeat Delta

ALBANY — Delta finished ahead of Jay County at the 2012 sectional tournament. In their first dual match this season, the Patriots turned the tables.
All five varsity players posted scores of 46 or better Monday to give the Jay County High School boys golf team a 169-172 victory over the host Eagles at Albany Golf Club.
Evan Mathias got off to a hot start as he parred each of the first four holes on the front nine at Albany. He finished with six pars and earned medalist honors with a 38.
Mitchel Rigby had a birdie and three pars to post a 42. Zach Fullenkamp had one birdie and shot 43, and Adam Alfont and Austin Wendel each finished at 46.
JCHS also finished seventh out of 13 teams Saturday with a score of 381 at the Monroe Central Invitational at Hickory Hills Golf Club.

Boles strikes out 14
Larissa Boles handled two-thirds of the outs herself Monday in the Patriot softball team’s 4-3 victory over the visiting Bluffton Tigers.
Boles, in her second game back after serving a seven-game suspension for a violation of team rules, struck out 14 batters. She earned her first win, as she allowed three runs on five hits.
Jay County (4-5) broke open a scoreless tie when Chelsea Tighe hit a one-out single in the third inning, stole second base and scored on a single from Boles. The Patriots went on to score all of their four runs in the frame.
Bluffton pulled to within 4-3 with a two-run home run in the sixth inning, but the Tigers couldn’t muster any more runs.
Boles finished 3-for-3 with a run and an RBI to lead the Jay County offense.

Track tops Indians
GAS CITY — Jay County’s girls won all but one event Monday to cruise to a 104-18 victory over the host Mississinewa Indians. The boys team got two wins apiece from Dylan Cope and Zane Shreve for a 73-50 win.
Malarie Houck owned the hurdles for the Patriot girls, winning the 100-meter event in 17.5 seconds and the 300 in 51.4. Ciera Barcus swept the jumps with leaps of 5 feet, 4 inches, in the high jump and 15 feet, 9 inches, in the long jump.
Cope led a sweep of the distance events for the JCHS boys with wins in the 800 run in 2 minutes, 18 seconds, and the 3,200 run in 11:31. Jalen Ryder was first in the 1,600 run in 5:14.
Shreve turned in first-place times of 15.9 in the 110 hurdles and 41.8 in the 300 hurdles.
Also adding victories were Katie Snyder (100 dash), Emi Minnich (1,600 run), Abbi Dunlavy (400 dash), Megan Wellman (800 run), Tasya Smith (200 dash), Abigail Johnson (3,200 run) and Sara Lennartz (discus) for the girls, and Andrew Eley (discus), Cade Price (high jump), J.D. Mangas (long jump) and Tyler Back (shot put) for the boys.

JV baseball loses
The Patriots gave up three runs in the opening frame and could not come back in a 4-1 loss Monday to the visiting Bellmont Braves.
Bellmont pushed its lead to 4-0 in the fifth inning before Jay County (2-5) got on the board in the sixth.
Chandler Jacks suffered the loss, giving up four runs on five hits and three walks in five innings. He also struck out 12 batters.
Jake Carpenter tossed two scoreless innings of relief.
Andrew McShane scored the only run of the game for the Patriots. Josh Lykins and Chandler Jacks had one hit apiece.[[In-content Ad]]
