Patriots defeat visiting Squaws

The Patriots took control early and never let go.
Jay County High School’s softball team scored four times in the first inning Thursday on the way to its 10th victory of the year, 5-3 over the visiting Bellmont Squaws.
Katie Aker went 2-for-2 with a walk, two runs, an RBI and a stolen base for the Patriots (10-6), who added a run in the third inning. Katlin Petro had two hits and an RBI.
Lexie Gierhart was 1-for-2 with two RBIs and a run, and Nikka Chaney doubled and scored once.
Rachelle Jackson held Bellmont in check, allowing just four hits while striking out six batters. The Squaws scored their three runs, all of which were unearned, in the fourth inning.

AC defeats netters
MONROE — Jay County’s girls tennis team dropped every match in straight sets Thursday as it fell 5-0 to the host Adams Central Flying Jets.
Miranda Reinhart earned the most games for the Patriots (5-5) in her 6-3, 6-4 loss to Heather Gerber at No. 3 singles. Jessica Ooten suffered just her second loss of the year, 6-4, 6-2 to Lydia Johnson at No. 2 singles.
Alyssa Rigby lost the No. 1 singles match 6-4, 6-1 to Jessica Ripley.
Alicia Degler and Kyla McKibben dropped the No. 1 doubles match 6-3, 6-1 to Madison Johnson and Emily Parish. At No. 2 doubles, Mackenzie McIntire and Brittany Stevens lost 6-0, 6-2 to Katie Carroll and Abby Snyder.
The JCHS junior varsity team lost 7-1 with the lone victory coming from Brooke Fraley.

Delta tops baseball
MUNCIE — The Patriots kept coming back, but it wasn’t quite enough as they fell 8-7 to the host Delta Eagles.
Delta took the lead with two runs in the first inning and never trailed despite Jay County’s repeated comebacks. The Patriots scored twice in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings but fell one run short.
Dustin Selvey suffered the loss for JCHS (8-6), which has dropped six of eight after a 5-0 start, giving up eight runs — six earned — in six innings. He allowed eight hits and two walks while striking out six batters.
Chance Fuller paced the Patriot offense, going 2-for-3 with two runs. Kyle Selvey and Devin Conatser each had two hits, and Jason Houston scored twice.

JV baseball wins
SELMA — A five-run sixth inning keyed Jay County as it picked up its third win of the year 10-5 over the host Wapahani Raiders.
Wes Hibbard went 3-for-3 with a triple, three runs and two RBIs to lead the Patriots (3-7), who never trailed. Tanner Reynolds added a single, a double, a triple and an RBI.
Sean Winget had two hits, two runs and two RBIs, and Keenan James added two hits, including a double, and two runs.
James earned the victory as he pitched six-plus innings while striking out seven batters.
