Patriots dominate Blackford, Marion (01/08/04)

Local Roundup

The host Blackford Bruins and the Marion Giants didn’t get to take home many ribbons Wednesday. Instead Jay County dominated the three-team gymnastics meet, barely allowing the other two teams a glimmer of hope.

The Patriots swept the top four finishing positions in three of the four events on the way to a winning score of 96.5.

Blackford was second with 77 points, and Marion finished with 71.1 points.

Sophomore Hannah Williams led Jay County, but got plenty of help from the rest of the roster.

Williams won the all-around competition with a 33.8, taking first in both the floor exercise and the balance beam. She scored a 9.05 on the floor and a 9.0 on the beam.

Her floor victory led a sweep of the top four spots, with freshman Kristin Brown taking second with an 8.3. Lacey Grider and Kayla Smith tied for third at 8.05.

Amanda Knight took home the vault victory with an 8.75, leading another Jay County sweep. Brittany Bauman was second with an 8.5, Williams was third at 8.35 and Grider was fourth at 7.95.

The uneven bars victory went to freshman Lacey Thornburg, who scored an 8.0. Knight was second at 7.55, Williams took third with a 7.4 and Grider and Makenzie Knight tied for fourth with 6.8s.

Grider was also third in the balance beam with a 6.8, and placed second in the all-around with a 29.6. Amanda Knight was fourth on the beam with a 6.75.

Jay County will be in action again today as it hosts its first home meet of the season against Coldwater at 6:45 p.m.

High Rollers fall short

The Jay County Blue Jay High Rollers bowling team made a tremendous comeback Wednesday against Bellmont only to lose as the 10-10 deadlock was broken by the tiebreaker.

The High Rollers trailed 8-2 after the first game before rallying for the tie by taking eight of 10 points in the second game. However, Bellmont won the total-pin tiebreaker 1793-1776.

The high game and series both went to Cory Mock. He finished with a 237 top game and had a 410 series.

The Jay County junior varsity team clobbered Heritage 20-0. Ryan Mescher notched the high game with a 175, and Summer Roush had the high series of 320.
