JCHS girls soccer
MARION - The Patriots earned a semifinal berth. Now, the task becomes Giant.
Jay County High School's girls soccer team defeated the Eastern Comets 1-0 Tuesday in their opening game at the sectional tournament hosted by Marion.
"The team really came together tonight," said JCHS coach Sue Rager. "They really wanted this win. It was nice to see the intensity and teamwork happening throughout the game."
The Patriots (6-6-2) will return to Ballard Field Thursday for the semifinal round, in which they will play the host Giants (12-2-2) at 7 p.m. Marion earned its semifinal berth Tuesday with a 2-1 victory over Blackford.
Thursday's other semifinal game, at 5 p.m., will pit undefeated Oak Hill against Norwell.
Jay County got the only goal of Tuesday's game less than 10 minutes after the opening kickoff. Senior Dana Horn passed to Brianne Wellman, who broke down the middle of the field, drew out the Eastern goalie and drilled the ball to the back of the net for a 1-0 lead at the 31:09 mark.
Wellman had seven of the Patriots' 19 shots on goal for the game. Horn added five, Tequila Guntle and Pazia Speed each had three and Meagan Logue finished with one.
The JCHS defense limited Eastern to just four shots on goal, all of which were saved by senior goalie Abby Loy.
