Patriots edge Bluffton (09/07/07)

Jay County roundup

BLUFFTON - In the chase for the school record, Thursday night's match was one the Patriots needed to turn around. And, they did.

Led by yet another win from its undefeated No. 2 doubles duo, the Jay County High School boys tennis team knocked off the Bluffton Tigers 3-2.

Mark Alberson and Adam Horn improved to 11-0 with their win over Bluffton, who the Patriots lost to 3-2 a year ago. The duo defeated Jon Dauterman and Cameron Gerber 6-4, 6-2.

Thomas McCowan and Heath Rigby made it a doubles sweep for the Patriots, edging Clint Baumgartner and Matt Gerber 6-4, 7-5 to improve to 7-4. Phil Powell won his sixth consecutive match, topping Gary Green 6-4, 6-2 at No. 2 singles.

At No. 1 singles, Josh Ludy suffered his first dual match loss of the season 6-1, 6-2 to Nathan Baker to fall to 9-2 overall. Chase Wellman took a 6-1, 7-5 defeat against Drew Neuenschwander at No. 3 singles.

Jared Valentine fell just short in a couple of marathon junior varsity matches, losing 8-7 (10-8) to Bryan Bowman and 7-6 (8-6) against Michael VanDerkock.

Spikers smash MC

PARKER CITY - The Patriot volleyball team bounced back from a tough loss to Liberty Christian Tuesday to clobber the Monroe Central Golden Bears 25-11, 25-15, 25-11 Thursday.

Shelby Rines led Jay County (9-5) again with a team-high 12 digs. She was second on the squad with 11 points and six kills.

Sharon Dirksen racked up 16 points, including five aces, and also had 20 assists. Sarah Westgerdes had nine kills and two blocks, Stephanie Wellman finished with six digs and Lindsey Current notched a pair of blocks.

Kelsey Wood had nine points and five digs to lead a 25-8, 25-12 victory of the JCHS junior varsity team (8-3). Liz Walker added nine points and five assists, Ashley Langenkamp had 10 points and Amy Alig totaled four kills.

Boys soccer ties rival

It took Jay County barely a minute to get on the board in the second half. But that was all the home team managed.

The Patriot boys soccer team had to settle for a tie Thursday against the sectional rival Blackford Bruins.

After a scoreless first half, Jay County (4-1-2) went on top in a hurry. Chase Ainsworth took care of the goal, scoring with just 1:14 off the clock.

The Patriots, who saw a four-game winning streak come to an end, held the lead for more than 20 minutes before Blackford got the equalizer. The Bruin score came from Adam Johnson off a J.T. Slusser assist with 17:39 remaining in the game and neither team scored again.

Jay County finished with 11 shots on goal - Ainsworth had a team-high five, followed by two apiece from Trey Dunn and Brad Horn - compared to seven for the Bruins. Kevin Dirksen finished with six saves.

The junior varsity game also ended in a 1-1 tie with Lance Louth scoring the JCHS goal.

Marauders top girls soccer

FORTVILLE - The Patriots and Mount Vernon Marauders played a game of alternating goals Thursday, but Jay County couldn't complete the pattern.

Mount Vernon scored with more than 20 minutes left in the game and the Patriots were unable to even up the score a third time as they fell 3-2.

The Marauders' Emily Theobald scored the opening goal, and Loryn Horn tied the game for Jay County off a Pazia Speed assist. Then in the second half Theobald pushed Mount Vernon on top again only to have Dana Horn chip in the tying tally.

But when Stephanie Johnson pushed the Marauders in front for a third time with 23:57 to play, Jay County (3-2) couldn't come up with the answer. They had one key opportunity to tie the game, but a Cassandra Huelskamp penalty kick missed off the cross bar.

Mount Vernon (4-3) out-shot the Patriots 13-8, with Huelskamp, Dana Horn and Brianne Wellman each taking two shots on goal. Abby Loy had 10 saves for JCHS.[[In-content Ad]]
