Patriots fall to Blackford, could earn rematch (05/12/04)

JCHS Roundup

Jay County stayed close with the Blackford Bruins for the first four innings Tuesday. They might get another chance to play them.

The Patriot softball team lost 7-0 to Blackford, but could meet them again in the sectional semifinal round. The sectional draw was released this week.

Jay County (6-13) trailed just 1-0 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning Tuesday. But, the Bruins took advantage of four errors and scored six runs in the fifth to pull away.

Amber Champ had the lone Patriot hit, an infield single to lead off the game. She also stole a base.

Brittany Logue took the defeat, allowing seven runs — three earned — on seven hits in six innings. She walked three and did not record a strikeout.

Jay County will open sectonal play against the Mississinewa Indians. The Patriots opened the season with a 7-6, eight-inning victory over Mississinewa.

The other first round game will pit the host Bruins against Elwood. Softball sectional tournaments begin Monday, May 24, but dates and times of each game were not available at press time.

The next regular-season game for the Patriots is at home today against South Adams at 4:30 p.m.
