Patriots find offense vs. MS

MUNCIE — The Patriots weren’t able to deliver hits at key moments Friday in a 2-0 loss to Memorial. They turned that trend around against the Rebels.
Jay County High School’s baseball team racked up 20 runs Saturday, pulling to .500 by sweeping a doubleheader against Muncie Southside 8-0 and 12-5.
Alex Dunn and Landry Inman each had two hits and two runs for the Patriots (7-7) in the opener. Kyle Selvey was 3-for-3 with a run.
Jason Houston paced the offense in game two, going 3-for-5 with two runs. Dunn added two hits and two runs, and Toby McCallister was 3-for-3 with a run.
Houston struck out 10 batters while walking just one as he tossed a one-hit shutout in game one. Wesley Hibbard earned the game-two victory, striking out eight in 4 2/3 scoreless innings.

Boys golf 4th at invite
WINCHESTER — Jay County turned in a fourth-place finish Saturday at the Winchester Invitational, posting a score of 360 at the 12-team event.
The Patriots trailed third-place Union County by two strokes at Winchester Golf Club. Richmond won with a 324, and Northeastern was second at 345.
Evan Mathias recorded two of Jay County’s three birdies on the 353-yard, par-4 third hole on the Beeson nine and the 345-yard, par-4 ninth hole on the Willow nine. He added nine pars, including five in a row on the Willow nine, to finish fourth overall with an 80.
Adam Alfont recorded all three of his pars on the Willow nine on the way to a 91. Zach Fullenkamp also had three pars as he shot 94, and Austin Wendel birdied the 458-yard, par-5 sixth hole on the Beeson nine en route to a 95.
Mitchel Rigby added a 102.

Boys track fourth
NEW CASTLE — The Patriots scored 78 Friday to finish fourth out of six teams at the New Castle Invitational.
Anderson scored 136 points to win the meet ahead of Connersville (101) and Yorktown (82).
Junior Zane Shreve earned the only win of the evening for Jay County with a time of 41.81 seconds in the 300-meter hurdles. He was also second in the 110 hurdles in 16.56, and third in the high jump.
The Patriots got three other second-place finishes in the field events, with Cade Price taking second in the high jump at 6 feet even. Tyler Back was second in the shot put at 52 feet even, and Andrew Eley took the runner-up spot in the discus at 130 feet, 5 inches.

JV baseball drops two
Jay County’s junior varsity baseball team rallied from a 13-0 deficit, but fell short in a doubleheader Saturday with losses of 15-12 and 17-2 to the visiting Alexandria Tigers.
The Patriots scored six times in the third inning and five in the sixth in the opener, but couldn’t complete the comeback. They gave up five runs in the first inning of game two.
Mitchell Kunkler allowed 11 runs — eight earned — on three hits in one inning to take the loss in the opener. Austin Beasley gave up 11 runs — nine earned — on nine hits in 4 2/3 innings as he suffered the game-two defeat.
Lucas Hendee finished 3-for-4 with a double, two runs and two RBIs in game one, and Kyler Carvel added a single, a double, three RBIs and two runs. Josh Priest had a hit and a run in the second game.[[In-content Ad]]
