Patriots finish 1-3 at Noblesville invitational (09/10/07)

NOBLESVILLE - The Jay County High School volleyball team struggled to a 1-3 record Saturday, finishing sixth at the Noblesville Invitational.

The lone win for the Patriots came against Frankfort, which finished in seventh place, in the opening match of the day by a 25-23, 25-21 score. In other matches JCHS lost 25-20, 25-13 to Class A No. 4 Wes-Del, 25-19, 25-10 to the host Millers and 25-22, 25-13 to Guerin Catholic.

Senior Shelby Rines led the lone Patriot victory of the day with 10 kills and four digs. She had three of her four points on aces, and also recorded a pair of blocks.

Sharon Dirksen had 13 assists against Frankfort, and Chelsea Grady totaled nine points.

Rines also led Jay County (10-8) overall for the weekend, with team highs of 44 digs, 24 kills and 20 points in the four matches.

Grady had 22 digs and 13 points, and Sarah Westgerdes added eight kills and four blocks. Dirksen put up 36 assists.

Tribe falls to Wapakoneta

WAPAKONETA, Ohio - The Fort Recovery freshman volleyball team is back at .500 after a 25-20, 27-25 loss Saturday to the Wapakoneta Redskins.

Nichole Kaiser led the Indians with four assists, six points and three kills.

Haley Wilson led the defnse with 13 digs, Kendra Brunswick had eight digs, Shelby Brunswick finished with seven points and Holly Thien totaled four kills.

Chief 7th wins invite

East Jay Middle School's volleyball team went 3-0 Saturday to win the West Jay Invitational while the eighth grade team finished at 2-1.

The Chief seventh graders defeated Wes-Del 254-22, 25-19 in its opener, then topped the host Eagles 25-16, 25-12 and South Adams 25-18, 25-19. The eighth graders scored victories over West Jay and South Adams, but lost to Wes-Del.

Gabbie Cross powered the East Jay seventh grade team with seven aces in the win over South Adams and three kills in the victory against Wes-Del. Emily Devoe racked up 10 aces against West Jay, Lexie Gierhart had nine points against Wes-Del and Abbey Vance put up eight assists versus Wes-Del.

Jennifer Dirksen's 13 points and nine digs were both team highs for the Eagle eighth grade squad in the three-match set. Mariah Hornaday had seven kills and three blocks, and Alyssa Rigby finished with nine assists.

Starfires fall to Heritage

BERNE - The South Adams High School football team dropped to 0-4 Friday night with a 32-0 loss to the Heritage Patriots.

The Starfires were limited to just 170 yards of total offense, including 63 in the second half in which they ran the ball 14 times for just six yards. Heritage, meanwhile, got touchdowns from four different players, including an 81-yard punt return with 7:31 left in the game for the final margin.

Jordan Steiner finished 10-of-19 for 118 yards through the air. Kyle DeArmond ran 16 times for 51 yards.

Wildcats defeat FR

MINSTER, Ohio - Fort Recovery's junior varsity football team lost 25-19 Saturday to the Minster Wildcats. The loss dropped the Indians to 1-2.[[In-content Ad]]
