Patriots finish at No. 9 in poll (02/27/07)

INDIANAPOLIS - When they enter tournament play tonight, the Patriots will do so as the ninth-ranked team in the state.

Jay County was voted No. 9 in Class 3A in the final poll of the season released today by The Associated Press. The team, which finished 16-4, was ranked as high as fifth at one point this season.

The Patriots, who open tournament play tonight at 7:30 p.m. against Delta (7-14) in the Class 3A tournament at Blackford, garnered 75 poll points, just one ahead of No. 10 Evansville Bosse. They were 23 points behind No. 8 Batesville (17-3).

Undefeated Edgewood (20-0) remained No. 1 with 288 out of a possible 300 points, and defending state champion New Castle (20-2) remained second. New Castle's only losses this year came against Class 4A competition - Marion and No. 5 Cathedral.

Jay County was 36th in the voting in the most recent Indiana coaches' poll, which encompasses all teams regardless of class. It was rated 21st in Class 3A by calpreps.com and finished 24th in Class 3A in the Sagarin Ratings.

Back powers the Eagles

DUNKIRK - Tyler Back made sure his team would finish on a high note.

Back scored more than half of the points for the West Jay Middle School sixth grade boys basketball team in a 40-23 victory over Montpelier Monday.

In the season finale for the Eagles, Back racked up 24 points. Blake Crouch added eight points, and Phil Anderson finished with five.

The B team also won, 20-16, with Jordan Wolford leading the effort with eight points.

Stars blank Union City

GENEVA - To say the Starfires were dominant would be an understatement.

The South Adams Middle School wrestling team won every match Monday in a 73-0 slaughter of Union City Westside. Eight of the victories came on pins, and another two by technical fall.

The Starfires had back-to-back pins three times from Justin Miller (95) and Dustin Wanner (100), Caleb Sprunger (120) and Cajon Dailey (125), and Adam Hofstetter (135) and Isaac Werst (140). Also scoring pins were Todd Batt (80) and Cody Cramer (160).

Jordan Neal (110) and T.J. Burnfield (145) each scored their wins by technical fall.

West Jay drops two

DALEVILLE - Drake Meska and Kyle Garringer each turned in a couple of wins, but the West Jay Middle School wrestling team still dropped both of its matches Monday. The Eagles fell 42-34 to Daleville and 47-33 to Wes-Del.

Garringer (135) won both of his matches by pin, against Wes-Del in 25 seconds and Daleville in 1:28. Meska (100) earned an 11-1 major decision against Daleville and a 4-2 victory against Wes-Del.

Chase Louck added a pin in 41 seconds against Daleville, and Nathan Drumm (120) had a pin in 42 seconds versus Wes-Del.

Five win titles

LEO - The Patriot Wrestling Club had five champions as it competed at the Leo Folkstyle meet this weekend.

Cameron Pfeifer, a semi-state qualifier for the Jay County High School team this year, turned in the top effort. He won all of his five matches in the 119-pound cadet division to take first place.

Drake Meska (105 - schoolboy) finished 4-0 to take his title. Also going undefeated were Casey Kenney (105 - cadet) at 3-0, Kyle Garringer (140 - novice) at 2-0 and Dylan Derrickson (120 - schoolboy) at 1-0.

Ben Theurer (135 - cadet) finished second with a 3-1 record.[[In-content Ad]]
