Patriots finish tied with Trojans (08/21/07)

Jay County roundup

NEW CASTLE - They got their first goal, and their first lead. But the Patriots couldn't hold on to it.

After falling 2-0 to Muncie Central in its season opener, the Jay County boys soccer team led New Castle 1-0 through the first 40 minutes Tuesday. But the host Trojans evened the score and the teams ended in a 1-1 deadlock.

Justen Moser scored the Patriots' first goal of the year, connecting on an assist from sophomore Brad Horn 16 minutes into the game. Jay County (0-1-1) missed on a penalty kick 14 minutes later, and New Castle tied the score with just 10 minutes left in the game.

Horn finished with a team-high three shots on goal, and Moser and Chase Ainsworth each had two. Kevin Dirksen recorded nine saves.

The Patriots dropped the junior varsity contest, 5-0.

Rain halts netters

UNION CITY - The Patriot boys tennis team was well on its way to its second win of the season. But while they could beat the Indians, they couldn't beat the rain.

Jay County had a sizable advantage in every match Tuesday when storms rolled through the area and stopped play. The teams will attempt to resume the action at a later date.

Phil Powell was leading the charge for the Patriots, who had dropped just two of the 40 completed games. The No. 2 singles player had a 6-0, 4-0 lead over Ian Armstrong when the match was halted.

At No. 1 singles Josh Ludy held a 4-1 lead over Cody Wicker, and at No. 2 singles it was Kyle Simmons ahead of Danny Lamm 6-0, 2-1. Both doubles matches were in the midst of shutouts, with No. 1 pair Thomas McCowan and Heath Rigby leading Zach Holt and Adam Barga 6-0, 3-0 and No. 2 duo Mark Alberson and Adam Horn ahead of Jordan Loesch and Levi Thornburg 6-0, 6-1.
