MONROE — The first step to making the Jay County girls swim team a winning one again has been taken.

In the previous two seasons the Patriots had won each of their first two meets against Muncie Southside and Elwood. But from there it had been downhill, starting against the Adams Central Flying Jets.

Prior to 2003-04 Jay County had never lost to Adams Central. But the Flying Jets turned their fortunes around, winning in each of the last two seasons including by a 119-67 count a year ago.

Now, however, the Patriots have put Adams Central back in its place. They put an end to two years of futility against the Jets, improving to 3-0 Monday night with a 111-75 victory.

“I am very happy about that,” said JCHS coach Bev Arnold. “I knew there would be several close races tonight ... I just told them that if they wanted to win tonight each person down the line had to beat their respective girl. That’s what we got done.

“It didn’t always happen that we won the event, but if we didn’t we came in there maybe for a second, third and fourth. That outscores.”

Jay County did win eight out of 12 events, getting two victories apiece from senior Lindsey Vesperry and freshman Cori Vormohr. It also got yet another win from freshman Lauren Murrell in the breaststroke, and a huge diving sweep led by freshman April Acker.

Acker picked up her first career victory in her third dual meet, scoring as high as six on some of her dives. She boasted a career-high point total of 142.20.

Brittany Lewis finished second in with 137.20 points, and Lacey VanSkyock was third with 130.30. Adams Central’s divers were close behind with a high score of 128.50.

Arnold said the sweep was a bit of a surprise, but a welcome one.

“The scores were very, very comparable ...,” she said, having seen the first sectional ranking list earlier in the day. “That got us off to a very nice start with a 10-point lead. I don’t think we ever looked back.

“I think all four divers (including junior varsity diver Tricia Skiver) had bests. They did some nice things tonight. They had some form. They had their toes pointed, they kept their ankles together and went in with straight entries. Plus, they were trying a little more difficult dives.”

Outscoring the Jets 13-3 in diving set the tone for Jay County for the evening as it never trailed in the meet.

Vesperry scored a pair of wins in the mid-distance freestyle races, starting with an easy win by 10 seconds in the 200-meter freestyle in 2-minutes, 42.84 seconds. She was also first in the 100 freestyle in 1:13.13.

For the first time in a dual meet this year Vormohr was challenged as the 50 freestyle was close at the midway point. However, she was able to win by more than two seconds in 29.71. She cruised to victory in the 100 butterfly by nearly 16 seconds in 1:16.22.

Vesperry and Vormohr were expected to be team leaders, but Murrell has also put up big points for the Patriots so far. With her 1:37.93 victory in the 100 breaststroke against Adams Central, she is the only other Jay County swimmer who has scored a win in each of the first three dual meets.

“That’s exciting that we’re getting another name that is coming into the winners circle, so to speak, time after time,” Arnold said. “The other two of course were Cori and Lindsey. I think we can count on them being right at the top at most meets, and now we have to pick up a few more people that are going to get that win for us.”

The Patriots also finished first in the 200 and 400 freestyle relays, and got a great effort from its second and third swimmers in each race. They put three swimmers in the top four in six out of eight individual events.

Among the excellent second-, third- and fourth-place efforts was one from Ivy Simons in the 200 freestyle. Well behind Vesperry and sitting in third place for almost the entire race, Simons came on like gangbusters in the final 25 meters to finish in second place and nearly two seconds ahead of the top Jet swimmer.

“That was a good race,” said Arnold of Simons, “and then Molly Sutton finishing the breaststroke in the style that she did. We put Molly in kind of at the last minute because Brianna Louth was not feeling well. So, she rose to the occasion.”[[In-content Ad]]
