JCHS cross country
UNION CITY - Chalk up another big win for the Jay County High School girls cross country team.
The Patriots packed four runners in the top six - including champion Alysha Miller - and scored 29 points to win the seven-team Union City Invitational for the third straight season. Muncie Central was a distant second again this year with 55 points, and Tri was third at 69.
Jay County's boys do not have enough runners for a team score. Muncie Central was first among six teams with 52 points, edging Randolph Southern (56).
All of the Patriot girls who scored for the team Saturday turned in season-best times, with Miller leading the way.
The freshman ran under the 20-minute mark easily and dominated the field. She was 14 seconds ahead of runner-up Marie Lumpkin of Union with a time of 19-minutes, 38 seconds.
Senior Amanda Johnson was just behind Lumpkin, also breaking the 20-minute barrier with a time of 19:55.
Sisters Kylie and Leah Wellman, a junior and freshman respectively, went back-to-back in fifth and sixth. Kylie finished in 20:21, and Leah was next in 20:34.
Katie Butcher rounded out the team score in 19th with a time of 22:21 as Jay County took its third invitational win of the year following victories at Bellmont and Oak Hill.
