Patriots heading to regional (06/10/03)

Local Roundup

Timing is everything. Just ask the Jay County golf team.

The Patriots surpassed their best 18-hole score of the season by 20 strokes Monday, placing second at the Huntington North sectional tournament at LaFontaine Golf Club with a score of 320.

They finished just one stroke behind the Marion Giants, who earned their fifth consecutive sectional title, and won a tie-breaker to beat out the Norwell Knights for second place. They are the first boys golf team in school history to reach the regional round as the top three teams at the tournament advance to play at Anderson’s Edgewood Country Club Friday.

The top three remaining individuals also advanced.

Jay County was really rolling early at LaFontaine, making the turn with a three stroke lead over Norwell. Marion was seven strokes back at the turn as the Patriots notched a 154.

Adam Foster was the leader through the first nine holes, shooting a 2-under-par 34 to begin his day. Tyler Johnston had a 39, Ben Freeman shot a 40, Alex Hunt had a 41 and Jesse Shawver notched a 44.

Jay County fell back to the pack as it finished the day, sliding just behind Marion and into a tie with Norwell at 320. It took second place thanks to the comparison of fifth-man scores: Hunt had an 84, just ahead of the Knights’ 85.

Foster put together his best round of the season with a 78, the third best score of the tournament. He joined Brad Moore of Mississnewa (74), Erie Barnes of Marion (77) and Michael Marlow of Norwell (78) as a match medalist.

Johnston stayed consistent on the back nine to finish one stroke behind Foster with a 79, while Shawver played par golf on the back nine for an 80. Freeman finished with an 83.

The previous best 18-hole score for the Patriots came at the Winchester Invitational May 3. They shot a 340, led by Johnston’s 80 that day.

The Patriots, Giants and Knights will be joined at the regional meet by four of the top 10 teams in the state, and the rest of the top-three finishers from the Richmond, Noblesville and Monroe Central sectionals. No. 2 Richmond will enter the tourney as the favorite, with No. 8 Carmel, No. 9 Anderson and No. 10 Noblesville also in attendance.

The top three teams and the top three remaining individuals will advance to the state meet.
