Patriots open with victory

FORT WAYNE — The Jay County High School gymnastics team opened its 2014 campaign with a win Monday, defeating Fort Wayne Northrop 98.25-90.35.
Lizzy Schoenlein, a freshman, won a pair of events to lead the Patriots, posting high scores of 9.0 on the balance beam and 8.8 on the floor exercise.
Schoenlein was also second in the uneven bars (8.05) and vault (8.7) as she placed second in the all-around competition with 34.55 points.
Tasya Smith, who finished third in the all-around, posted a high score of 8.8 in the vault, and also picked up a pair of third-place finishes on bars (7.8) and beam (8.0).
Malarie Houck also scored for the Patriots in every event, with her high score coming on the vault with an 8.6.

WJ tops Chiefs
DUNKIRK — The West Jay Middle School seventh grade girls basketball team outscored the East Jay Chiefs 10-7 in overtime Monday, beating its county rival 41-38.
East Jay (3-1) trailed 17-14 heading into the fourth quarter but outscored the Eagles 17-14 in the final frame to send the game into overtime.
Shelby Caldwell scored a game-high 21 points for the Eagles, who improved to 5-0 on the season. She also grabbed 10 rebounds for a double-double. Rhegan Shimp added 13 points and eight rebounds, and Kendall Garringer added five points.
Gwen Omstead scored 10 points as the lone Chief to reach double figures. Klarissa Hemmelgarn tallied nine, and Hanna Dillon and Kendra Muhlenkamp each chipped in six.

EJ double up WJ
DUNKIRK — The East Jay eighth grade girls basketball team held West Jay scoreless in the second quarter en route to a 28-14 win Monday.
The Chiefs had an 8-4 advantage at halftime and scored 11 points in the third quarter while limiting the Eagles to just five points in each of the final two frames.
Betsy Muhlenkamp had a game-high eight points for East Jay (3-1). Taylor Muhlenkamp and Katie Beougher each scored six points, and Audrey Dirksen tallied four points.
Hanna Ault led the Eagles (3-2) with six points to go with her six rebounds and four steals. Kimber Harris recorded four points, three rebounds and four steals, and Katy Hamilton scored two points.

West Jay cagers win
DUNKIRK — The West Jay sixth grade girls basketball A team earned a 14-8 win Monday over East Jay.
The Eagles’ and Chiefs’ B teams tied 4-4 in one half of play.
West Jay’s Allison Jobe led all scorers with 10 points for the Eagles’ A team. She also grabbed four rebounds.
Kymia Hankins and Hallie Fields each added two points, and Asilyn Davis grabbed four rebounds.
For the Chiefs, Mikele Suman, Mackynzie Fairchild and Sara Muhlenkamp all had two points.
In B-team action, Alyssa Leonhard and Macey Wietzel both scored two points for East Jay.
Leah Hamilton and Lexus Harding each had two points for West Jay.[[In-content Ad]]
