Patriots pick up 11th victory

PARKER CITY — It’ll be another winning year for the Patriots.
The Jay County High School girls basketball team got solid free-throw shooting down the stretch Thursday as it locked up its 11th straight winning season with a 36-29 victory over the host Monroe Central Golden Bears.
The Patriots (11-5), whose last losing season came with a 9-12 mark in 2000-01, had a three-point lead at the end of the first quarter, and that margin remained heading into the final period. They shot 7-of-9 from the foul line in the fourth quarter to help secure the win.
Senior Kassi Hemmelgarn had 12 points to lead the Patriots. LeAnn Horn followed with seven points, and Maria Murphy scored six.
Kaylinda Phillips turned in a game-high 14 points for Monroe Central (11-6).
In the junior varsity game, Katlin Petro scored 12 points to lead JCHS to a 35-27 victory.
Chief wrestlers win
MONROE — Seven of the East Jay Middle School wrestling team’s victories came by pin Thursday as it picked up a road win over Adams Central, 45-40.
East Jay got four consecutive pins during the match from Ivan Hemmelgarn (97), Brandt Pearson (102), Brent Englehardt (107) and Mitchell Bruggeman (112). Also turning in pins for the Chiefs were Jose Bermudez (75), Matt Blackford (137) and Michael Williamson (162).
Levi Hummel (147) won by a 5-4 decision.
WJ 7th triumphs
DUNKIRK — Three players scored in double figures Thursday to lead the West Jay seventh grade boys basketball team to a 41-30 victory over the visiting Monroe Central Golden Bears. The eighth grade team stumbled in the fourth quarter in a 46-32 defeat.
Andrew Trewyn and Justin Crouch each scored 12 points for the WJMS seventh graders, who improved to 8-6. Dakota Grove joined them in double figures with 11 points.
Dan Meranda had 16 points for the eighth graders, who trailed by just one point heading into the final period. Joey Springer added seven points.
