Patriots pick up 1st win (08/25/04)

Local Roundup

CONNERSVILLE — A couple of disappointing losses made for a rough start to the year for the Jay County girls soccer team. Tuesday the team made sure its conference season would not begin the same way.

The Patriots scored three times in the first half on the way to a 4-2 Olympic Athletic Conference victory over the Connersville Spartans.

Jay County (1-2, 1-0 OAC) got a score from Sara Garringer on the first shot of the game with 34:18 on the clock. Connersville tied the game fewer than five minutes later.

However, senior Jamie Bruggeman gave the Patriots the lead for good when she slammed a shot to the right corner of the goal with 15:12 to play in the first half.

Garringer scored again about six minutes later for a 3-1 halftime lead. Bruggeman added her second goal of the game just 1:30 into the second half on an assist from Brittany Logue.

The Spartans scored with 29:12 to go for the final margin.

“We didn’t shut down in the final minutes of the game,” said Jay County coach Sue Rager, whose team gave up two goals in the last four minutes of a 2-1 loss to Huntington North Saturday. “I think the girls were tired of losing. They played strong soccer for 80 minutes tonight.”

The Patriots will be off for a week before visiting the Norwell Knights Wednesday, Sept. 1 at 5 p.m.

Jay golfers fall

GENEVA — The Jay County girls golfers didn’t have such a good day visiting their neighbors to the north. Those neighbors, the South Adams Starfires, did.

South Adams shot a season-best score by 10 strokes, and the Patriots were four strokes higher than their season average as they took a 227-206 defeat Tuesday.

Trisha Champ carded the best Jay County total by 10 with a score of 48. The freshman has led the team in every meet this year.

Shonda Sutton followed with a 58, Brianne Morrical shot 60 and Katey Kohler completed the team score with a 61. Miranda Denney also shot 61, and Alissa McMillan finished with a 68.
