Patriots place second

Jay County roundup

ANDERSON - Abby Denney and Cara Garringer tied for third Monday to lead the Jay County High School girls golf team to a runner-up finish in the Olympic Athletic Conference tournament.

The pair of juniors keyed the Patriots to a score of 409, their second-best for an 18-hole tournament this year. Connersville cruised to the victory with a 367, host Anderson Highland (474) was third and Muncie Southside (510) finished fourth.

Denney parred three of the final four holes on the front nine and added a fourth on the 13th hole. She also had eight bogeys as she finished with a 93.

Cara Garringer opened her round with a par and had three in a row on holes eight through 10. She also parred the 15th hole to go along with six bogeys to match Denney's score.

Kaelee Montgomery of Connersville also shot 93. The Spartans' Ellie Weber earned medalist honors with an 88, and her teammate Kenzie Crutchfield added a 90.

The top five golfers earned All-OAC honors.

Macey Gerber totaled three pars and four bogeys to shoot 106 for the Patriots. Brittany Stevens completed the team score with a 112.

Whitney Gray finished at 134.

Shreve takes first

DECATUR - Zane Shreve won the boys race Monday, but the East Jay Middle School cross country teams both lost to host Bellmont.

The Chief boys fell by a 23-35 score, and the girls team lost 27-28.

Shreve easily won the boys race, crossing the finish line nearly 15 seconds ahead of the field in 11 minutes, 35 seconds. Jalen Ryder was fifth for EJMS in 12:34.

Nicholas Leuthold placed seventh in 12:55 ahead of Chaz Carroll (10th - 13:03) and Tyler Wendel (12th - 13:17).

Abigail Johnson paced the East Jay girls as the runner-up with a time of 12:11. Emi Minnich followed in 12:17 followed by Megan Wellman (sixth - 12:39), Amber Huelskamp (seventh - 12:48) and Alex Loy (eighth - 12:49).

WJMS boys win

Kyle Selvey and Miranda Gerber each finished first Monday to lead the West Jay Middle School cross country teams.

The Eagle boys scored 30 points to finish just ahead of Hartford City (32) in the three-team meet. Montpelier was third with 74 points.

Hartford City (32) won the competition ahead of Montpelier (37).

Selvey and Kyler Carvel led the way in the boys race, posting times of 12 minutes, 45 seconds and 12:26 respectively to take first and second.

Gerber took the top spot in the girls race at 14:20. Desiree Parfitt finished eighth in 16:48.

Skyler Johnson placed eighth for the WJMS boys in 15:03. Darrian Bechtol (15:03) was ninth, and Skylar Newsome (15:04) finished 10th.[[In-content Ad]]
