Patriots push Anderson (01/26/07)
JCHS girls basketball
ANDERSON - Anderson was ranked ninth in the state in Indiana's largest class.
It had not lost in eight tries on its home court this year.
It's last defeat in the Wigwam was nearly a year ago, by one point, to Class 3A No. 3 New Castle.
But that didn't mean Jay County was going to make things easy on the host Indians.
The Patriot girls basketball team showed up for a fight Thursday, pushing Class 4A No. 9 Anderson for three quarters before the Indians were finally able to get some breathing room and take a 74-58 win.
Jay County (11-7) trailed by nine at the half, but came out of the locker room like gangbusters. Senior Sara Garringer scored 11 of her game-high 21 points during the period and the Patriots got as close as two points before the Indians scored the final bucket of the quarter for a 43-39 lead.
But four Anderson players put up at least five points in a 31-point fourth quarter as the team completed its home schedule at 9-0 and sent JCHS home with the loss. The Indians made 10-of-11 free throws in the fourth quarter as they pulled away.
Makeba Head scored 19 points to lead Anderson (17-2), which had four players in double figures. Deja Wills added 13 points, and Lakeisha Noethtick and Nellie Eskew each scored 11.
Garringer buried four 3-pointers for the Patriots en route to her game-high total in her best effort since returning from a knee injury that sidelined her for seven games. She also shared the team high of three assists with junior Dana Horn.
Freshman Lindsey Wellman scored 10 of her 18 points in the second quarter, and Whitney Homan also reached double figures with 10 points. Nicole Pfeifer grabbed six rebounds.
Junior varsity
Pazia Speed did most of her scoring in the first quarter as Jay County opened a nine-point lead on the way to a 42-37 victory over the Indians.
Speed hit a pair of first-quarter 3-pointers and scored 10 of her 14 points in the opening period. The Patriots led 14-5 after the first six minutes and were ahead by 10 after three quarters before holding on for the win.
Following Speed for Jay County was Sharon Dirksen with eight points. Amber Edmundson added five points.
Chearie Menifield and Jasmine McGhee led Anderson with eight points apiece.[[In-content Ad]]
