TIPTON — There were plenty of moments in Friday night’s game which would drive a coach crazy, but Jay County’s Craig Teagle was a happy man after the game. His players executed to perfection when it counted most.

The Patriots used excellent defense and a game-clinching rebound in the final minute to seal a 63-60 victory over the Tipton Blue Devils.

“I’m very proud of the team for their second half comeback,” said Teagle. “Scott Bruggeman’s floor play when he came back in was outstanding. He did exactly what we asked.”

Bruggeman was the defensive leader on the Patriots’ final stand.

Tipton took the ball with 21 seconds on the clock, which should have been plenty of time to set up a final shot. But, Jay County had two fouls to give and Bruggeman used them both.

The second knocked him out of the game, but it also left the Blue Devils (2-3) with just 9.6 seconds. Faced with so little time, Jake Heard forced an errant 15-footer, and Jay County’s John Retter grabbed the rebound.

Retter made 1-of-2 on the other end, and a desperation, half-court 3-pointer from Rob Mahaney missed as time expired.

That final rebound was the 11th of the game for Retter, who gave the Patriots some much-needed life off the bench.

“I was just trying to get the rebound and secure it,” Retter said of the final play. “I was just trying to keep it away from the other team.

“I just try to do what coach Teagle needs from me — anything to help the team win.”

Retter led Jay County to a 32-20 rebounding advantage. He also had five points and one assist.

“He was a huge spark,” said Teagle. “He did nice job rebounding, he did a good job defensively and then helped by just deflecting and hustling and giving us that spark off the bench. I thought he got our bench into it a lot more and the kids coming back in played with a lot more fire.”

Senior Mark Kelly paced the Patriots (3-1), who bounced back in the second half after struggling defensively in the first and trailing 37-29 at halftime. He scored in double figures for the fourth straight game, finishing 8-of-12 from the field for 18 points.

He scored 12 of those points in the second half, and also finished with four rebounds and two assists.

“I’m confident,” said Kelly of his team-leading scoring output. “Once you get confidence it’s just easier to shoot it.”

He also pointed to a balanced team effort as Trent Bailey and Corey Comer joined him in double figures with 13 and 12 points respectively. Andy Pinkerton just missed double digits with eight points as the Patriots shot 51 percent from the field.

Pinkerton and Comer added five rebounds apiece, and Bruggeman finished with five rebounds.

“If we have four people in double figures, not very many teams can hang with us,” Kelly said. “If we would’ve hit our free throws it definitely wouldn’t have been as close as it was.”

Jay County struggled to just 7-of-18 from the foul line, but it was fouls which helped it get back in the game early in the second half.

The Patriots, who gave up more points in the first half than they did in their entire last game against Blackford, scored the first four points of the second half. Then Bailey drove to the lane, drawing a foul from Brick Ehman.

Ehman was hit with a technical foul for his reaction to the call, and first-year coach Travis Daugherty was hit with another later in the quarter. Daugherty said the Patriots’ 9-0 run to open the second half and the pair of technical fouls turned the tide of the contest.

“We knew they were going to come out with some intensity and they did,” he said. “They made some big plays to get back in it. There were just some different events that took place right there in a row that took the air out of us. We kept fighting, we kept playing hard, we just didn’t make enough plays.”

Renn Herron paced Tipton with 17 points. Heard followed with 16 points, and Radsovic Babic notched 12 points.

Jay JV holds on

Jay County’s junior varsity built a 10-point lead after three quarters, but barely hung on for a 32-29 victory.

Tipton got as close as two points in the final period as the Patriots struggled. But, they were able to hold on as the home team’s 3-pointer at the buzzer was no good.

Randy Evans and Clint Muhlenkamp paced Jay County with eight points apiece. Casey Waters had seven points, and John Retter added six points.

R.J. Burns led the Blue Devils with eight points. Bryan Elston added six, and Matt Hodges had five.[[In-content Ad]]
