Patriots rally to beat SW

An early deficit didn’t do much to slow down the Patriots.
The Jay County High School softball team scored three times in the fourth inning Tuesday to take the lead on the way to a 5-2 victory over the visiting Southern Wells Raiders.
Southern Wells scored once in the first and third innings to pull ahead, but the Patriots (4-2) responded with a run in the bottom of the third before grabbing the advantage in the three-run fourth.
Rachelle Jackson improved to 3-0 with the win, striking out 10 batters while limiting the Raiders to just three hits.
Abbey Vance went 2-for-2 with a triple, two runs and an RBI, and Katie Aker added a single, a run and an RBI.
Starfire JV tops Jay
The Jay County junior varsity baseball team had a brief lead Tuesday, but fell 9-8 to the visiting South Adams Starfires.
SAHS jumped ahead with five runs in the second inning before the Patriots (1-3) took the lead with six runs in the third. However, the Starfires responded with four runs in the fourth inning and held on for the win.
Taylor Fugiett suffered the loss for the Patriots as he tossed four innings. Zach Pryor threw three innings in relief.
Nick Clemens went 2-for-2 with two RBIs and two runs. Ravi Patel added three hits and three RBIs, and Chaz Carroll had a single, a run and an RBI.

Chiefs beat Northside
MUNCIE — Emi Minnich and Nathan Heitkamp each picked up two wins Tuesday to lead the East Jay Middle School track teams to victory.
The girls defeat host Northside 63-19 and the boys added a 51-31 triumph.
Minnich took the top spot in the 800-meter run and 1,600 run with times of 2 minutes, 51.41 seconds, and 6:06.47 respectively. Heitkamp took the top spot in the high jump at 4 feet, 8 inches, and the 200 dash in 27.68.
Ava Kunkler won the girls 400 dash in 1:06.35, Lizzy Schoenlein was first in the high jump at 4 feet, 9 inches, and Sydney Robbins took the shot put at 26 feet, 9 1-2 inches.
Matt Blackford finished first in the boys shot put at 34 feet, 10 inches, Michael Denney won the 800 dash in 2:55.53 and Luke Weaver took the 1,600 run in 6:12.37.

Waters takes loss

PARMA, Italy — Jay County High School graduate Mitch Waters suffered the loss Friday as Novara United fell 7-2 to Cariparma Parma in the Italian Baseball League.
Waters started and gave up six runs — two earned — on eight hits and two walks. He struck out four batters.
For the season, Waters is 0-2 with a 3.18 ERA. He has struck out seven batters in 11 1-3 innings.

Perod scores five
Giovanni Perod led all scorers Saturday in the Jay Community Center Boomer Spring Soccer League.
Perod finished with five goals to top the third and fourth grade division. Nathan Heitkamp, Levi Moyer and Chip Wendel all had four goals in the seventh and eighth grade division.
In flag football, Joshua Dowlen racked up three touchdowns to lead the way in the preschool through first grade division. Ryan VanCise and Jared Timmerman each had a pair of TDs in the second through fourth grade division.

Miles makes top 10
INDIANAPOLIS — Courtney Miles turned in a top-10 finish as she and Halle Hill competed for Marion’s Mid-America Gymnastics at the Indiana State Gymnastics Championships on April 1 at the Indian State Fairgrounds.
Miles, a sixth grader at East Jay Middle School, posted her best finish with a 9.275 for eighth place on the balance beam. She added an 8.85 on the floor exercise.
The best result for Hill, a fourth grader at East Elementary, came on the floor, where she was 14th with an 8.9.

Indiana SELECT wins
WEST LAFAYETTE — The Indiana SELECT fifth and sixth grade girls basketball team finished first Sunday as it competed at the Blue Chip/Indiana Youth Basketball League tournament.
Playing for the squad were Shelby Caldwell, Jordyn Barga, Allison Hoening, Avery West, Dawn Minnick and Cassidy Qualls. The team is made up of athletes from Jay, Randolph and Delaware counties.
