Patriots roll in opening match (08/15/07)
JCHS volleyball
WINCHESTER - The Patriots were able to get a win under their belts with a match-up against the second-ranked team in the state looming.
Stephanie Wellman led Jay County's volleyball team as it finished off the Winchester Golden Falcons in three games Tuesday, 27-25, 25-14, 25-18. Class 3A No. 2 Delta, which topped the Patriots in the 2006 sectional championship match, will visit JCHS Thursday.
Wellman paced the Patriots from behind the service line, where she scored a third of her team-best 15 points by way of aces. The senior also had seven kills, seven digs and three assists.
Fellow seniors Sarah Mescher and Shelby Rines supported her effort. Mescher was the match leader in both kills (11) and blocks (three), and Rines had 10 kills and nine points.
Sharon Dirksen finished with 17 assists and eight points, Chelsea Grady came up with 14 digs and Lindsey Current had eight points on 10-of-10 serving.
Junior varsity
Liz Walker totaled seven points and five assists as Jay County defeated the Golden Falcons 25-16, 25-22.
Laura Castillo had team-highs of five kills and five digs, and Kelsey Wood matched Walker with seven points to go along with three kills. Kristi Morningstar and Kelci Reed each finished with three digs.[[In-content Ad]]
