The season-opening winning streak for the Jay County boys tennis team continued Monday. The Patriots swept the visiting Union City Indians in straight sets, dropping just four games in all as they improved to 3-0 with the 5-0 victory.
Jay County dominated the doubles matches, winning both by 6-0, 6-0 scores. Heath Rigby and Thomas McCowan clobbered Ian Armstrong and Jordan Loesch at No. 1 doubles to improve to 4-2, and Mark Alberson and Adam Horn topped Dan Lamm and Steve Smith.
Kyle Simmons also had a shutout as he earned his first victory in dual meet action. He improved to 2-3 overall by topping Nick Fields 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 singles.
Josh Ludy pushed his team-best record to 5-1 at No. 1 singles with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Cody Wicker following a third-place finish at the DeKalb Invitational Saturday. Phil Powell (4-2) gave up just one game, topping Matt Peden 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 singles.
SA runners take third
GARRETT - South Adams' boys cross country team took third place in a 10-team field at the Garrett Hokum-Karem Saturday. West Noble was first in 150-minutes, 34 seconds, followed by New Haven (163:21) and the Starfires (166:58).
The top SAHS team was Nathan Rupp and Alex Brito, placing 10th in 53:23 on the nine-mile course. Brian Lehman and Justin Sommer were 15th followed by Aaron Lehman and Sam Heckard (17th) and Cody Meshberger and Andrew Smith (24th).
Delta tops JC JV
The Jay County junior varsity football team pulled even late in the game Monday, but couldn't hold on in a 20-12 loss to the Delta Eagles.
The Patriots (0-1) trailed 12-6 before John Hawn scored on a 2-yard run with just three minutes to play. However, Delta responded with a TD and 2-point conversion less than two minutes later for the final margin.
In addition to his scoring run, Hawn also hit a 49-yard touchdown pass to Dustin Harris in the first half. Harris and Sam Lyons each had fumble recoveries and Lance VanSkyock notched an interception.[[In-content Ad]]
