Patriots roll past Rebels (11/12/05)
JCHS girls basketball
MUNCIE — A team with an abundance of young players, not surprisingly, felt a lot more comfortable in its second game than than in its first.
Jay County High School’s girls basketball team, which committed a ton of turnovers in its opener earlier this week, limited its miscues and used a second quarter spurt to pull away for a 62-39 victory over Muncie Southside here Friday night.
The Patriots (1-1) took a slim 13-10 lead into the second period, then outscored the host Rebels by a 21-6 margin for a comfortable margin that was never seriously threatened.
“I thought we played with a lot more confidence ... we did a lot better job taking care of the basketball,” Jay County coach Kirk Comer said. “We got a lot more shots at the basket and we shot free throws pretty well (74 percent). For several of these girls, it’s just the second game, and I thought they played with a lot less nerves tonight.”
Sara Garringer and Theresa Reinhart paced the Patriots with 15 and 14 points, respectively.
Taking advantage of a 2-3 zone by the Rebels, Reinhart buried a pair of second quarter 3-pointers to help the Patriots pad their margin.
Chelsea DeBoy and Miranda Betz each chipped in seven points for Jay County, while Whitney Homan and Abby Loy scored five each.
In Friday night’s junior varsity game, Jay County improved its record to 2-0 with a 45-12 victory over Southside.
Kaelee Keller led JCHS with 16 points and Amber Edmundson scored 9.
