Patriots roll to first victory

MUNCIE - The Jay County High School softball team snapped out of its losing streak in a big way Thursday, scoring as many runs in a single inning as it had in its first five games combined en route to an 18-1, five-inning destruction of the Muncie Southside Rebels.
The Patriots (1-5) pushed out to a 6-0 lead after three innings and then took complete control with a nine-run fourth. They had scored just seven runs in their first five games of the year.
Kendra Younger returned from an injury with a double and a single, scoring three times and driving in a pair of runs. Laura Castillo went 3-for-4 with three runs and two RBIs, Rachelle Jackson scored three times and drove in two runs and Ranae Ray had two hits, two runs and two RBIs.
Jackson, a freshman, picked up her first career win, allowing just one run on two hits and a walk. She struck out two batters.
Junior varsity
The Patriots cruised past Muncie Southside 14-3 for their first victory.
Taylor Franklin set the tone for Jay County (1-2) with two hits and four runs. Whitni Somers had a double, a run and an RBI, and Abbey Vance, Tasha McCowan and Krista Taylor each scored twice.
Vance earned the win, as she gave up three runs - two earned - on six hits while striking out six.[[In-content Ad]]
