Patriots send Portland home (08/08/05)
Portland Rockets
CINCINNATI — Another shutout brought an end to the Portland Rockets’ AABC tournament run this weekend.
Portland dropped its elimination game 3-0 to the Northwest Patriots in the American Amateur Baseball Congress regional tournament in Cincinnati. Each of the Rockets final four losses of the season came by way of the shutout.
Jay County graduate Pete Byrum gave Portland (32-16-1) a solid effort on the hill. He allowed just three runs on six hits.
The Rockets had one big scoring opportunity with two runners on and one out, but Kyle Dygert was robbed of a hit thanks to a great defensive play in left-center field. They failed to score and dropped out of the tournament, which was eventually won by the Canton Stallions.
The Stallions, who beat Portland 4-0 Thursday night, knocked off the South Bend Senators to reach the AABC World Series.
The Rockets will play in the National Amateur Baseball Federation tournament in Fort Wayne beginning Thursday.[[In-content Ad]]
