Patriots shoot 152 to defeat Bluffton (04/22/05)

JCHS roundup

BLUFFTON — The Patriots followed their first loss in more than a year with one of the best rounds in team history.

Jay County’s golf team shot a 152, just four strokes off the school record set last season, to defeat the Bluffton Tigers (197) Thursday.

Tyler Johnston posted the same score he did as he led the team to last year’s record round, finishing with a 35. Alex Hunt and Adam Foster followed with matching 38s as the Patriots bounced back from Monday night’s loss to Delta.

Jay County (2-1) also got a 41 from Nathan McClung as its top four scores were better than anyone on the Bluffton team. Adam Neuenschwander led the Tigers (0-3) with a 44, and Ben Freeman had a 47 for the Patriots.

Gray Suman led the JCHS junior varsity team to its first win, 209-231 over Bluffton, with a 43.

Norwell blanks softball

OSSIAN — Lindsay Flesch followed a three-hitter against Adams Central Monday with an even better effort against the Jay County softball team Thursday.

Flesch held the Patriots to just one hit as her Norwell Knights scored a 7-0 victory.

Chelsea DeBoy had the lone hit for Jay County against Flesch, who struck out 15 batters. Norwell improved to 8-2 with the win.

Shae Keller took the loss for the Patriots (2-7), allowing seven runs — four earned — on nine hits. She walked four and struck out three.

JV softball wins

PORTLAND — The Jay County junior varsity softball team fell behind twice, but came back both times to score a 4-3 victory over the Norwell Knights Thursday.

Norwell scored twice in the top of the first inning, but the Patriots tied the score in the bottom of the frame. The Knights went back on top by scoring once in the second inning, but Amber Edmundson did not allow another run and Jay County posted two tallies in the sixth to grab the victory.

Edmundson picked up her first win as she went the distance. She struck out three and walked seven.

Ashley Bunch paced the offense, going 1-for-2 with two RBIs and a run. Lauren Edmundson scored twice, and Amber Detro singled and scored a run.

JV baseball tops Devils

PORTLAND — Cory Locke switched ends of the battery and helped get the Jay County junior varsity baseball team back over the .500 mark with a 7-4 win over the Richmond Red Devils Thursday.

Locke, normally a catcher, took the mound for the Patriots and allowed just one hit in four innings to earn the victory. He gave up three runs — all unearned — while striking out one and walking three.

Kaleb Carpenter allowed one unearned run on two hits while striking out four in three innings of relief.

R.J. Fuller had the big hit for Jay County with a home run. Michael Jobe finished 3-for-3, and Luke Goetz was 2-for-4 with a double.[[In-content Ad]]
