CENTERVILLE - The Patriots learned their lesson.
Friday night, Craig Teagle was disappointed because he felt his team lacked poise during a key stretch of the second half in their first loss of the season to Winchester. Just 24 hours later, it was a different story.
Despite facing a 12-point deficit with a quarter to play, the Jay County High School boys basketball team kept its focus Saturday night. It scored the first nine points of the fourth quarter, finished regulation in a tie and dominated the host Centerville Bulldogs in overtime for a 60-50 victory.
"The difference to me was ... we played with poise tonight," said Teagle. "You've got to keep your head up and stay in the game. That's the attitude you have to have. We didn't give up and we didn't let down.
"This is a really good win for our kids. To come back on the road in a tough environment says a lot about these kids. I hope they use this as momentum for the rest of the season."
At the close of the third quarter the Patriots looked as if they were going to get blown out. They hit just two field goals in the third, failed to score for the final 5:30 of the period and were on the wrong end of a 6-0 run.
But within the first two minutes of the fourth quarter the tide turned.
Jay County (9-1) went to a trapping defense, running two players at any Bulldog who got his hands on the ball. That strategy resulted in three consecutive turnovers after Centerville had given the ball away just twice in the first three periods.
On the other end of the floor, the Patriots started running the offensive through passing post man Eric Homan. He assisted on a 3-pointer to Garrett Krieg, his lone basket of the game, to to start a 9-0 run, and later dished to Billy Wellman for another 3-pointer. In between the two triples Wellman added a hoop and free throw for a three-point play as JCHS trimmed the Bulldog lead to 41-38.
Centerville took a timeout with six minutes to play, and they scored back-to-back hoops. But the Patriots were undeniably back in the game.
"In the third quarter we struggled," said Teagle. "We decided to go to a trap for a few possessions to see if it could create some momentum. And it did."
Jay County, unable to sustain the trap because of its lack of size, went back to its base defense after the Bulldogs timeout, with one exception. The Patriots stopped switching defenders on Centerville's Drew Schauss, allowing Billy Wellman to play him one-on-one.
After the home team extended its lead back to 45-38, JCHS went on a 10-1 run. Kyle Simmons sent the Patriot fans into a frenzy with his game-tying 3-pointer with 1:05 to go, and Eric Homan pushed Jay County ahead off an assist from Simmons with 24 seconds left.
Schauss hit two free throws to tie the game after being fouled on a drive to the hoop with six seconds left. The Bulldogs has three fouls to give, allowing them to burn off most of the remaining time before an Adam Garringer fade-away 3-pointer at the buzzer missed its mark.
It didn't matter though, because overtime belonged to the Patriots.
Garringer gave JCHS the lead with the only field goal of the extra session, and the visitors finished the game by hitting 10 consecutive free throws.
Centerville shot 57 percent in the first half, but had no field goals in the final eight minutes of the game. After turning the ball over just twice in the first three quarters, it gave the ball away six times in the fourth quarter and overtime.
"Late in the game we just weren't as cautious with the basketball as we should be," said Bulldog coach Ryan Chiddister. "We can make better decisions in those situations.
"I think offensively we couldn't do much better than we did in the first three quarters."
Garringer totalled 18 points to lead the Patriots, and he also grabbed five rebounds. Simmons had 16 points and three assists, and Wellman finished with 13 points and six boards.
Drew Schauss matched Garringer with 18 points to go along with four assists. Cory Noelker also reached double figures with 10 points.
Junior varsity
Brad Horn buried a 3-pointer at the buzzer to lift Jay County to a 29-26 victory over the Bulldogs.
Horn led the Patriots with 13 points. Josh Beaty and Ben Walter added six points apiece.
Spencer Coulter totaled nine points for Centerville, and Kyler Scholtz scored five.
