Patriots sixth at Winchester (05/01/06)

WINCHESTER — A couple of state-ranked teams led the way while the Jay County boys golf team finished sixth at the 14-team Winchester Invitational Saturday.

The Patriots shot 352, just one stroke behind Muncie Southside and two back of Union City at Winchester Golf Club. Seventh-ranked Richmond (Red) was first with a 315, No. 14 Indianapolis Park Tudor placed second at 323, and Richmond (White) was third with a 343.

Senior Josh Hall paced Jay County, which had three scores in the 80s. He opened and closed his round with pars, finished with 11 total and had a run of five straight at one point. He added one birdie as he shot 83.

Ben Gasca also had one birdie and added six pars for an 87. Adam Gray posted a pair of birdies for an 89, and James Brosher finished with a 93.

Tennis goes 0-7

WATERLOO — Missing nine members because of other school commitments, the Jay County girls tennis team went winless at the DeKalb Invitational Saturday.

The closest match for the Patriots, who were missing their top two singles players and half of their No. 2 doubles combination, came in doubles action. Betsy Knittle and Brittany Lewis rolled in their first set at No. 2 doubles, but lost the second in a tie-breaker and retired against Kara Peters and Cassie Twibell trailing 5-3 in the third.

At No. 1 doubles Megan Knittle and Jessica Muhlenkamp fell by scores of 6-0, 6-3 and 6-1, 6-2 to teams from Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger and Triton Central respectively.

Megan Adams lost 6-1, 6-0 to Alisha Anthony at No. 1 singles and 6-0, 6-0 to Brittany Fancher of Blackford. At No. 2 singles Tiffani Bickel dropped matches 7-5, 6-0 to Jacky Swain from Northwood and 6-1, 6-0 to Samantha Rhoton of Blackford.[[In-content Ad]]
