Golfers finish 10th

YORKTOWN - The back nine played more difficult than the front for the boys golf team, which finished 10th at Saturday's Yorktown Invitational at The Players Club with a 397.

Pendleton Heights won the tournament at 325, seven strokes ahead of the host Tigers.

Drew Houck and Adam Mescher each posted a 90 for the Patriots, who totaled 11 pars and two birdies on the front nine. The team had just four pars on no birdies on the back.

Five of Houck's six pars came as he shot 42 on the front nine, including four straight to open his round.

Softball slips to 0-3

CONNERSVILLE - The softball team got on the board in the second game of a double-header Saturday, but it wasn't enough to pick up the first win of the season. The Patriots fell 14-0 and 14-6 to the Connersville Spartans in Olympic Athletic Conference action.

After getting shut out in its first two games - the season-opener Thursday ended in a 10-0 loss - Jay County scored three times in the second game Saturday against Connersville. It added two runs in the third to pull even at five, but gave up six in the fifth and three in the seventh in the defeat.

Lexie Gierhart, a freshman, ripped three doubles in three at bats and scored twice for the Patriots. Sophomore Danielle Wellman and freshman Rachelle Jackson each had two doubles and two RBIs, and junior Laura Castillo added two hits and two runs.

Wellman also went 2-for-2 in the opener.

Jay County gave up 15 unearned runs in the games combined. Brittney Watson took the game-one loss, and Jackson was the losing pitcher in game two.
