Patriots stay in park in victory over South Adams (05/14/08)

JCHS/SAHS baseball

BERNE - The Patriots won, but South Adams kept the ball in the park. That, in itself, is somewhat of a victory.

Jay County High School's baseball team, ranked No. 7 in Class 4A, went homer-less for just the second time this season as it defeated the host Starfires 9-3 Tuesday night.

Josh Ludy led the still-potent Patriot offense, going 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs. Thomas McCowan drove in four runs with two hits, and Michael Jobe had a double, two runs and two RBIs.

Michael Daniels and Nick Pryor each scored twice.

Phil Powell picked up the win, giving up three runs - two earned - on three hits and a walk in six innings. Ludy struck out two in a scoreless seventh.

Daniel Bollenbacher took the loss for SAHS, allowing nine runs - six earned - on six hits and six walks. He struck out seven in six innings.

The Starfires (10-8) held Jay County without a home run for the first time in nine games. The only other squad to do so this year is Connersville.

The Patriots (18-2) have 42 homers on the year.

Bollenbacher paced the South Adams offense with a double and two RBIs.

Daniel Dynes doubled and drove in a run, and Caleb Armenta and Ethan Sharp each had a hit and a run.

Junior varsity

Ben Walter drove in the game-winning run to lift Jay County to a 9-8 victory over the Starfires.

The Patriots, who trailed 7-1 early, pulled back to within a run heading into the final frame. They scored twice in the bottom of the seventh inning, with Walter delivering the deciding run.

Mike Masters was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with a double and three runs. Andrew Lancaster and Ryan Miskinis each had two hits, and Nathaniel Brown and John Pettus chipped in two runs apiece.

Masters also did the majority of the work on the mound, earning the win as he struck out six batters in 6 2/3 innings.

He gave up four runs - three earned - on four hits and a walk.
