Patriots struggle in season's opening meet (08/06/03)

Local Roundup

More rain may not have been a bad thing.

A day after trying to participate in the Richmond Invitational, which was washed out because of rain after just six holes, the Jay County girls golf team struggled in its first full meet of the year. The Patriots placed seventh in the seven-team Monroe Central Invitational at Hickory Hills Golf Club in Farmland with a score of 561.

Delta won the meet with a 388, and Shenandoah was second at 397. Jay County’s score put it 112 strokes behind host Monroe Central.

The Patriots, who have an almost completely new lineup after losing top golfer Elaine Hutson and a host of other seniors from 2002, were led by Deanna Drinkut. She shot a team-best 122.

Brianne Morrical was next with a 129, Shonda Sutton finished with a 141 and Angie Stults shot a 169.

Thursday’s scheduled meet against Tri has been canceled. The next action for Jay County will be Monday at the Marion Invitational at 9 a.m.
