PORTLAND — The Patriots golfers matched their second-highest score of the year Tuesday. They still got a win.

Jay County scored a 235, their worst in the last six meets, but still finished three strokes ahead of Wes-Del in a three-way meet at Portland Country Club. Yorktown dominated the event with a score of 179.

Trisha Champ’s experience of the first hole typified the day for the Patriots. She was on the green on the 275-yard, par-4 in two strokes, but proceeded to five-putt for a seven.

Jay County was also heavily effected by penalty strokes as it had 15 shots go either in the water or out of bounds.

“It wasn’t a good way to start off a long week,” said Patriot coach Tom Ferguson, whose team plays today and Thursday. “Hopefully they’ll be able to pick it up at Crestview (against Muncie Southside tonight).”

The team will also host Delta Thursday.

Champ finished with a team-best scored of 55, and Shonda Sutton followed with a 59. Katey Kohler came in with a 60, Brianne Morrical shot 61 and Ashley Bunch had a 71.

Yorktown’s top four golfers all shot in the 40s, with Aubrey Watt earning match medalist honors with a 43.

Girls CC second

CONVERSE — Alyssa Johnson finished second, and so did the team.

The Jay County girls cross country team placed second in an invitational for the second time this season, scoring 58 points at Oak Hill Tuesday. Western took first with 30 points in the seven-team event, and Blackford was third with 87.

The Patriot boys were eighth out of eight teams with 235 points. Blackford won with 33 points, and the host Golden Eagles were second with 53.

Johnson paced the Jay County girls — who also were second at the Bellmont Invitational — as she placed second behind Anna Hurlock of Western with a time of 16-minutes, 44 seconds.

Amanda Johnson was next for the Patriots, finishing seventh in 17:40. Jessica Mosier took 15th in 18:30, Amber Detro was 19th in 18:39 and Jill Roughia finished the team score in 18:54.

The boys team struggled as both Blackford and Oak Hill finished their team score before Ian Thomas crossed the line as the top Patriot in 33rd with a time of 19:56. He was followed by Cory Mock in 44th in 20:14.

Travis Towell was 61st in 20:46, Josh Atkinson was right behind him in 62nd in 20:54 and Edwin Clott placed 66th in 21:02.

Also running for the girls team were Rose Weaver (26th in 19:32), Lindsey Vesperry (27th in 19:33), Andrea Collins (49th) in 21:34), Kelli Whitenack (62nd in 23:17) and Ashley Anderson (56th in 24:06). For the boys were Mitchell Thomas (70th in 21:14), Josh Selvey (90th in 22:02), Doug Murray (93rd in 22:07), Cody Sutton (95th in 22:14), Josh Hawn (96th in 22:17), Josh Stultz (97th in 22:23) and Josh Shatto (123rd in 26:54).

The Patriots will run in the Blackford Invitational Saturday at 9:30 a.m.

Boys soccer falls

MUNCIE — The Jay County boys soccer team lost Tuesday, dropping a 2-1 decision to the Muncie Burris Owls.

The Patriots had a 1-0 lead after a penalty kick goal by Trent Bailey with eight minutes left in the first half. However, Burris tied the game before halftime and got what would be the winning score 15 minutes into the second half.

Jay County had trouble scoring in the defeat despite a 34-12 shooting advantage.

The Patriots, now 3-4, will play at Blackford Thursday at 4:30 p.m.

Freshman football tops Spartans

PORTLAND — Jay County’s freshman football team continued its roll Tuesday, improving to 3-0 with a 21-12 victory over the Connersville Spartans.

Connersville went for a touchdown on the opening drive of the game, but the Patriots bounced back to take the halftime lead.

After a Michael Jobe blocked punt — his first of two in the game — Sam Lyons scored on a 4-yard run. Aaron Daniels found Jobe with the 2-point conversion pass for an 8-6 lead at the break.

Daniels completed the opening drive of the second half by running in 15 yards for a touchdown. Austin May tacked on the extra point.

Baxter Holdcroft set up the third Jay County touchdown with a fumble recovery, and Kyle Cook went for a 62-yard touchdown run for a 21-6 advantage. Connersville scored again, but missed the 2-point try for the final margin.

Cook had nine tackles, and Bryce DeBoy and Jobe each added seven. Chris Moore had a fumble recovery.[[In-content Ad]]
