NEW CASTLE — They made a lot of progress in one week.

After finishing in fifth place at the Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger regional a week earlier, Jay County’s cheerleaders showed up ready to go at Saturday’s state meet. The Patriots finished in sixth place at the Indiana Cheerleader’s Association state competition at New Castle, vaulting over three of the teams which had defeated them just seven days before.

Jay County scored 327 points, for an average of five more points per judge than at the regional meet. The squad also eliminated 20 penalty points to push ahead of regional rivals Norwell (324.5), Gary Wallace (311.5) and New Haven (290.5).

Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger, which won the regional title 34 points ahead of the Patriots, barely edged Jay County again as it finished with 329 points.

“We had one goal, to do better than we had done last week,” said Jay County coach Mindy Weaver, whose group finished fourth a year ago and fifth in 2003. “Last week we had several problems and we did a much better job today. So, we reached that goal.”

Pendleton Heights won the Class 3A state title with 367.5 points, finishing just one-half point ahead of Jasper. Mount Vernon was third with 357 points.

Also winning state titles were Carmel in Class 4A, Knightstown in Class 2A and Northeast Dubois in Class 1A. Homestead won the partner stunt title, and Mount Vernon’s Allie Smith won the individual state championship.

After scoring 78, 78 and 75 out of 100 from the three judges at the regional, Jay County’s scores jumped Saturday. Only one of the four judges put the squad below 80. The high water mark came at 86.5, from a judge who was especially complimentary of the Patriots’ formations, choreography, tumbling and degree of difficulty.

The highest scores for Jay County across the board came in fundamentals, partner stunts/pyramids and tumbling where it scored 34 out of a possible 40 from the four judges.

Weaver said one of the keys to her squad’s improvement at the state level was eliminating penalty points. She also said her girls just seemed to be in a better state of mind at New Castle.

“The girls were just out of sync (last week),” Weaver said. “Instead of having a good time (they were) stressed about the routine. Today they were a little more relaxed, a little more confident.

“We made some changes this week to hopefully help them be a little more confident and all those changes worked out nicely.”[[In-content Ad]]
