Patriots take down Blackford

A pair of victories at the No. 2 positions helped lift the Jay County High School girls tennis team to a 3-2 victory over the Blackford Bruins Tuesday in its season opener.
Jessica Ooten cruised to her win at No. 2 singles by a 6-1, 6-1 score over Shelby Rhoton. Seniors Mackenzie McIntire and Brittany Stevens dominated their second set in a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Justine Ickes and Lizzie Mattson.
Alyssa Rigby, a senior, locked up the opening win for the Patriots with her effort at No. 1 singles. She came through in a first-set tiebreaker and went on to top Sierra Rodgers 7-6 (7-5), 6-1.
Miranda Reinhart dropped the No. 3 singles match 6-4, 6-4 to Rachael Baker while Alicia Degler and Kyla McKibben lost 6-0, 7-5 at No. 1 doubles to Hope Miller and Whitney Hapner.
Jay County won the junior varsity match 4-2 with Shawna Miller and Sydney Bost turning in an 8-0 victory at No. 2 doubles.

Track dominates two
MUNCIE — Five athletes each won a pair of events to lead the Patriots to their victories.
The girls team scored 124 points to slaughter Blackford and host Muncie Southside, which each finished with 11. The boys tallied 85 to defeat Southside (52) and Blackford (19).

Maria Murphy and Ciera Barcus combined to sweep the field events for the girls, with Murphy taking the shot put at 36 feet, 3 inches, and discus at 117 feet, 6 inches. Barcus had leaps of 4 feet, 11 inches, and 15 feet, 2½ inches, to win the high and long jump respectively.
Malarie Houck also had two wins, taking the 200-meter dash in 28.6 seconds and the 100 hurdles in 16.2.
Dylan Cope posted times of 2 minutes, 16 seconds and 4:58 to win the 800 run and 1,600 run for the boys team. Brad Leuthold took the 200 dash in 24.8 and the 400 dash in 53.4.
Other wins for Jay County came from Amber Huelskamp, Eme Miller, Kaitlin Hemmelgarn, Morgan Link, Blake Crouch, Austin Bentz, Zane Shreve, Cade Price and Tyler Back.

Conatser leads win
FORT WAYNE — Devin Conatser led Jay County to its second straight win to open the season Tuesday as it knocked off the host Wayne Generals 6-2.
Conatser went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run for the Patriots, who scored single runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings. They added three runs in the top of the seventh to put the game out of reach.
Kyle Selvey also had two hits while scoring a run, and Landry Inman finished with a single, two RBIs and a run.
Andy Haffner went the distance for the victory, striking out seven batters while walking just one. He gave up two runs, one of which was earned, on five hits.[[In-content Ad]]
