The Patriots donated a point to their opponent and still came away with a victory.
Jay County's boys tennis team was short-handed in its opening match Tuesday, forfeiting the No. 3 singles position because it did not have enough players to fill the lineup. Still, the Patriots came through for a 3-2 victory over the visiting Marion Giants.
Sophomore Phil Powell finished off the win for Jay County in comeback fashion. After dropping the first set 6-1 at No. 2 singles, he rallied to control the next two sets for a 1-6, 6-2, 6-3 victory.
Josh Ludy took the other contested singles match, topping Alex Hornett 7-5, 6-3 at the No. 1 spot.
Juniors Thomas McCowan and Heath Rigby won their first career match at No. 1 doubles, topping Kyle Carter and Max Fischer 6-4, 6-3.
The only JCHS defeat of the night came at No. 2 doubles. Kyle Simmons and Michael Daniels won a first-set tiebreaker, but fell in the next two in a 6-7 (3-7), 6-1, 6-3 loss.
Houck finishes second
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Drew Houck finished as the national runner-up as he competed in basketball at the U.S. Junior Olympic Skills Competition Friday.
Houck was second among the three national finalists in the 12-13-year-old division. He finished behind champion Joshua Christensen, Laie, Hawaii.[[In-content Ad]]
