Patriots take opener (08/16/06)

Local roundup

The Patriots donated a point to their opponent and still came away with a victory.

Jay County's boys tennis team was short-handed in its opening match Tuesday, forfeiting the No. 3 singles position because it did not have enough players to fill the lineup. Still, the Patriots came through for a 3-2 victory over the visiting Marion Giants.

Sophomore Phil Powell finished off the win for Jay County in comeback fashion. After dropping the first set 6-1 at No. 2 singles, he rallied to control the next two sets for a 1-6, 6-2, 6-3 victory.

Josh Ludy took the other contested singles match, topping Alex Hornett 7-5, 6-3 at the No. 1 spot.

Juniors Thomas McCowan and Heath Rigby won their first career match at No. 1 doubles, topping Kyle Carter and Max Fischer 6-4, 6-3.

The only JCHS defeat of the night came at No. 2 doubles. Kyle Simmons and Michael Daniels won a first-set tiebreaker, but fell in the next two in a 6-7 (3-7), 6-1, 6-3 loss.
