Patriots tie season opener (08/22/2008)

Local roundup

MONROEVILLE - It makes sense that Heritage and Jay County would be mirror images of each other.

The teams - both nicknamed "Patriots" - played to a 2-2 tie in high school girls soccer Thursday night.

Jay County and Heritage both went scoreless in the first half of the season opener before the nets opened up after the intermission. Brianne Wellman scored a pair of unassisted goals for JCHS in the second 40 minutes, and the home Patriots matched her for the tie game.

Heritage finished with 12 shots on goal, and Jay County was just one behind with 11. Wellman led the team with five shots, fellow senior Kaelee Keller had four and Loryn Horn and Mallory Poole each added one.

Mollie May totaled 10 saves.

Norwell blanks netters

OSSIAN - The second match of the season was just as tough as the first for the boys tennis team. After opening with a 5-0 loss to Marion Tuesday, the Patriots dropped a 5-0 decision Thursday to the host Norwell Knights.

Phil Powell had the closest match for JCHS at No. 1 singles, winning five games. His loss came by a 6-3, 6-2 final to Jason Isch.

Kyle Simmons fell 6-2, 6-1 to Reid Imel at No. 2 singles, and Jared Valentine dropped the No. 3 singles match 6-1, 6-2 to Kyle Fillman.

Adam Horn and Chase Wellman had a better second set than the first, but lost 6-1, 6-3 to Tim Baker and Ross Matthews in the No. 1 doubles match. Sam Miller and Tylor Smith dropped the No. 2 doubles match 6-0, 6-0 to Kyle Reinhard and Thye Petty.

Jay County lost all five junior varsity matches, including three by shutout. The closest match was Joe Imel's 8-3 loss to Brandon Taylor.

Downed by Delta

MUNCIE - The Patriot volleyball team struggled Thursday against the Class 3A No. 5 Delta Eagles in a 25-11, 25-12, 25-17 defeat.

Sarah Westgerdes had team highs of five kills and two blocks in Jay County's season opener. She also served three points.

Kelsey Wood added five points, four digs and three kills, and Chelsea Grady totaled nine digs and three kills. Kristi Morningstar put up six assists, Kelci Reed had four digs and Amy Alig added two blocks.
