Patriots tie unbeaten Lakeview Christian (10/05/05)
JCHS boys soccer
MARION — The Patriot boys soccer team had to settle for a tie Tuesday. But against the Marion Lakeview Christian Lions, that’s as close as anyone has come this year.
Jay County became the third team to tie Lakeview Christian this year as the game ended in a 3-3 deadlock. The Lions are now 13-0-3, and have finished two of the last three seasons without a defeat.
The Patriots (8-5-1) trailed 2-0 just 12 minutes into the game as senior Josh Singer scored a pair of goals, one on a header from a corner kick and the other on a breakaway. But then the visitors came alive.
Scott “Scooter” Bruggeman scored five minutes after the second Singer goal, getting a pass from fellow junior Luke McClung.
The score remained 2-1 in favor of Lakeview Christian at the half.
Bruggeman struck again just three minutes into the second half. He tied the game on a penalty kick after freshman Trey Dunn was fouled inside the 18-yard box.
Twenty minutes later McClung and Bruggeman connected again. This time McClung took a direct kick from the left side, sending a pass to Bruggeman at the far post. Bruggeman knocked the ball in with his shoulder to give the Patriots the lead.
However, Singer wouldn’t let Bruggeman win the scoring war. The Lakeview Christian senior got the tying tally with just nine minutes to play, and the teams went scoreless the rest of the way for the tie.
Bruggeman scored on all three of his shots on goal, with a pair of assists coming from McClung.
Singer connected on three of his four shots on goal.
Jay County finished with nine shots on goal in all, with Dunn, Ryan Wellman and McClung each adding two.
Derek Mills came up with a pair of saves.[[In-content Ad]]
