The Blackford Bruins’ second visit to Jay County didn’t go much better than its first.

The Patriot freshmen crushed Blackford for the second time this season by a 29-15 count Monday night. Jay County also topped the Bruins 47-17 as part of the Cross County Line Challenge earlier this month.

Phil Powell paced the Patriots (6-2), who shut out the Bruins in the opening period. He scored 10 points, hitting all six of his free-throw attempts, and grabbed five rebounds.

Jay County held Blackford to just 25 percent shooting from the field. The Bruins also made just 1-of-11 free throws.

Cole Ingram had eight points, nine rebounds and two assists, and Dexter Shreve also scored eight points. Kyle Simmons finished with four rebounds, four assists and two steals.

Jay girls fall

PONETO — Jay County’s freshman girls slipped back to the .500 mark Monday night with a 23-18 loss to the Southern Wells Raiders.

The Patriots (4-4) shut out Southern Wells in the second quarter, but still trailed 8-7 at halftime. They slipped behind by three with eight minutes to play and could not recover.

Chelsea Grady scored nine points to lead Jay County. Mackenzie Loy finished with seven points.

Cavs stomp Fort

FORT RECOVERY — The Fort Recovery freshman boys were outscored by at least five points in every quarter of a 57-24 loss to the Coldwater Cavaliers.

The Indians (2-1) trailed 28-13 at halftime, and Coldwater posted 18 third-quarter points to finish them off.

Tom Will scored 11 points for the Tribe, and Brent Faller added seven.

EJ/FR split pair

The East Jay Chiefs and Fort Recovery Indians each came away with a victory as their middle school boys teams battled Monday.

Host East Jay won the eighth grade game 34-23, while the Indians took the seventh grade contest 29-22.

Austin Emerick paced the East Jay eighth graders (5-0), who scored 17 third-quarter points to take control, with 12 points. Brad Horn and Eric Homan each scored seven, and Tyler Freyburgher added six.

Fort Recovery (1-1) got 10 points from Josh Wendel and six by Greg Kahlig.

The Indian seventh grade boys (2-0) took a four-point lead in the first quarter and stayed ahead for the victory. Craig Kaiser scored 13 points, and John Homan added six.

Garrett Krieg scored 10 points for East Jay (1-4), and Drew Houck added six.[[In-content Ad]]
