Patriots top Wapahani

SELMA - The Patriots were barely off the bus when they got on the scoreboard.

Jay County High School's boys soccer team needed just a minute of action Tuesday to take a 1-0 lead, rolling to its second straight shutout 4-0 over the host Wapahani Raiders.

Senior Patrick Johnson passed to his classmate Brad Horn in the opening minute, and Horn converted his 20th goal of the season. Johnson added a score of his own four minutes later as the Patriots, who topped South Adams 5-0 Saturday, never trailed.

Horn scored two more goals, one off of a Ben Brandt assist, for JCHS (7-2) in the opening half.

Jay County finished with nine shots on goal - Five by Horn and four from Johnson. Adam Daniels saved all of Wapahani's five shots.

Golfers close season

HARTFORD CITY - Jay County's girls golf team finished its regular season Tuesday by finishing second in a three-team meet at Blackford Golf Club.

The Patriots posted a 211 to finish behind the host Blackford Bruins (191) and ahead of Southern Wells (226).

Abby Denney set the pace for JCHS with two pars and six bogeys for a 46. Cara Garringer had three pars in her round of 51, and Macey Gerber also shot 51 with one par and five bogeys.

Brittany Stevens recorded the lone birdie of the day for the Patriots on the par-3 ninth hole. She completed the team score with a 53.

Carly Fox of Blackford earned medalist honors with a 43.

Whitney Gray shot 55 for JCHS, and Alyssa Fennig added a 63.

Jay County, which plays in the Norwell sectional Saturday at Timber Ridge Golf Club in Bluffton, finished 8-5 for a third straight winning dual-meet season.

EJMS spikers win

The East Jay Middle School volleyball teams each won Tuesday with the eighth graders defeating Montpelier 25-9, 25-6. The seventh grade squad turned in a 25-1, 25-19 win.

Both Chief teams used dominant service games as Katie Aker led the eighth graders (4-1) with 17 points, including 11 aces, and three digs. Rachel Ferguson and Ali Inman each had nine points and six aces.

Jessica Kerrigan powered the seventh graders (3-1) with 19 points and 14 aces.

Carvel wins for WJ

WINCHESTER - Kyler Carvel won the boys race Tuesday, but host Driver knocked off the West Jay Middle School boys cross country team 23-38.

Carvel posted a time of 11 minutes, 12 seconds to win the 3K race. Kyle Selvey was fourth in 11:55.

Caleb Kraft followed in 10th in 14:59 ahead of Skyler Johnson (11th - 15:13) and Alec Burchum (12th - 17:04).

Miranda Gerber finished second in the girls race for the Eagles with a time of 14 minutes flat. Desiree Parfitt was third in 15:07, and Kendra Kane took eighth at 17:23.

JV football rolls

Eric Beougher racked up three touchdowns Monday in leading the Jay County junior varsity football team to a 50-6 victory over the Winchester Golden Falcons.

Beougher scored on TD runs of 3, 4 and 8 yards while adding a pair of 2-point conversions runs for the Patriots (2-2). Blake Crouch added TD runs of 11 and 34 yards with two 2-point conversions, Kameron Bentz scored on an 85-yard kickoff return, and Taylor Farmer recovered a fumble for a TD.[[In-content Ad]]
