Patriots top Wes-Del for 2nd straight win (05/18/04)

Jay County Roundup

With the sectional tournament just a week away, the Jay County softball team is playing as well as it has all year.

The Patriots won back-to-back games for the first time in three weeks with a 3-2 victory over the Wes-Del Warriors Monday.

Brittany Logue was outstanding on the mound for Jay County (8-14) for the second straight contest. She allowed just two runs — one earned — on one hit in seven innings.

She walked three and struck out three to improve to 5-7 on the season.

Logue was also the starter last week when the Patriots handed Anderson its fourth loss of the season, 1-0. She has allowed just one earned run and four hits in her last 14 innings of work.

Saffron Redwine had the game-breaking hit Monday, whacking an inside the park home run to left field in the fifth inning. Both teams had scored twice in fourth inning.

Katie Alberson drove in the other two Jay County runs with a single. Amber Champ and Jenni Chittum each scored once.

Stephanie Imel also had a pair of hits.

The Patriots will look for a third straight win today when they visit Monroe Central at 4:30 p.m.

Patriots rally

The Jay County baseball team (12-8) looked to be in some trouble Monday, but for the second straight game Josh Atkinson bailed it out.

Atkinson, who tossed a three-hitter to allow the Patriots to split a double-header with Fort Recovery Saturday, came on in relief facing a 4-1 deficit. He tossed a trio of scoreless innings as his team came back for a 5-4 victory over the Fort Wayne South Side Archers.

Jay County starter Rhett Retter gave up four runs, two because of a misplayed fly ball, one on a balk and one on a wild pitch. The Patriots got one run back in the bottom of the fourth after a leadoff triple by John Retter and an RBI single by Adam Brandt.

They added four runs in the fifth inning after Heath Williams singled and Chad Keen reached base on an error. Mike Smith knocked them both in with a single, and Brandt later brought Smith around with a two-out triple.

Mike Alberson singled to drive in Brandt with what would be the winning run, and Atkinson made it stand up. He allowed just one hit in his three innings to pick up his second win in as many games.

Brandt finished with two hits, two RBIs and a run, and Smith had one hit, one run and a pair of RBIs.

Jay County will look to extend its winning streak to three when it hosts Muncie Southside today at 4:30 p.m.

Delta flattens Pats

The eighth-ranked Delta Eagles hammered Jay County Monday, as the Patriot tennis team took just two games overall in a 5-0 defeat.

Delta (13-1) scored three shutouts, with Hayley Hall topping Whitney Schemenaur at No. 1 singles, Jessica Thomas defeating Angie Stults at No. 3 singles and Kristin Crider and Katie Bryan knocking off Chelsea Reff and Erin Schmiesing at No. 2 doubles all by 6-0, 6-0 scores.

Julie Sours and Erin St. Myers lost for just the third time this season at No. 1 doubles to Tricia Gorenc and Laura Yadon 6-1, 6-0. At No. 2 singles Stephanie Homan lost a 6-0, 6-1 decision to Kelsey Atkins.

The draw for the sectional tournament was also held Monday, with Jay County getting a first-round bye. It will play Mississinewa in the semifinal round at Marion Friday at 4:30 p.m.

Blackford and Madison-Grant will play in the first round Thursday at 4:30 p.m., with two-time defending champion Marion awaiting the winner in the other semifinal match Friday. The championship match will be Saturday at 10 a.m.

In junior varsity action Monday the Patriots dropped to Delta 5-0.

No. 1 singles player Brianne Morrical and the No. 1 doubles pair of Annika Kuitzsch and Carissa Wilkins picked up the best results of the day. Morrical lost to Lindsey Loffer 8-2 and Kuitzsch and Wilkins fell to Alyssa Templeton and Kristi Wrights 8-2.

Amanda Hicks lost to Victoria Brewer 8-1 at No. 2 singles, and Jenae Horn fell to Chelsea Overmyer at No. 3 singles 8-0. At No. 2 doubles Jessica Muhlenkamp and Megan Knittle lost 8-0 to Rachel Whited and Ali Reuter.
