Temperatures in the 90s didn't help. And neither did the flurry of balls the Patriots sent out of bounds.

But they still came up with a victory.

Jay County High School's girls golf team was well off of its recent performances, but managed a 199-229 victory Tuesday at Portland Golf Club over the Winchester Golden Falcons.

The previous three nine-hole scores for the Patriots were 184, 182 and 184. They may have been close to those scores again if not for blasting 10 balls out of bounds.

"We had a lot of penalty strokes, especially for the varsity team," said JCHS coach Tom Ferguson. "It was, I think, a combination of a long weekend and a lot of heat today. They're not used to playing in weather this hot ... but its something they may need to get used to."

Jay County hosts Monroe Central today with a high forecast temperature of 88 degrees.

Senior Jennifer Hunt put three shots out of bounds Tuesday, but caught fire at the end of her round to earn medalist honors.

After three bogeys, three double bogeys and one triple bogey in her first seven holes, Hunt landed her tee shot on No. 8 - a 119-yard, par-3 - short of the green. She watched the ball roll onto the putting surface and to within just a couple feet of the hole and then tapped in for the Patriots' only birdie of the day.

She went on to par the 348-yard, par-4 ninth hole to finish with a 46. The top score for Winchester was a 51 by Shantel Short.

Rachel Osterholt got off to a solid start, opening with back-to-back bogeys on the eighth and ninth holes. On No. 2, a 113-yard, par-3, she hit her tee shot just in front of the green on the right side, and it curved up and about eight feet above the cup. She left her putt to the left of the hole, but then rolled in her only par of the day.

She added bogeys on the fourth, fifth and sixth holes for a 49, the first time she has broken 50 this season.

"Rachel has been playing No. 5, and lately she's solidified that No. 5 spot," said Ferguson of the senior shot between 50 and 54 in each of her last six rounds before Tuesday. "She's been the most consistent out of ... the three that have been fighting for that position. She's been staying right around 50 every time."

Ivy Simons parred the 275-yard, par-4 first hole, her second of the day, and also had three bogeys to shoot 52.

Abby Denney had two pars, on the first and eighth holes, and Cara Garringer played even on the third, but both were hurt by one torturous tee.

For Denney it was No. 7, where she hit three balls out of bounds. Garringer faced a similar fate on No. 4, hitting out of bounds four times. They finished with rounds of 52 and 56 respectively.

"I'll take a little bit of credit for that," said Ferguson, noting a lack of practice time after playing Thursday and then having a long holiday weekend. "One of the first things I'm going to talk about is ... they need to pull an iron out if they hit a ball out of bounds and just get off the tee. ... Just a little bit smarter play."

Janelle Yaryan (57), Sarah Nevlle (57) and Mylee Winger (64) trailed Short for Winchester.

Despite the difficulties, the Patriots pushed their record to 5-1. The lone loss came last week to No. 4 Richmond.

The 2007 Jay County team set the school record for winning percentage at 11-1.

"... our goal was to be very comparable to last year, and our scores have been very comparable to last year at this point," said Ferguson. "I'm pleased with where the girls are at.

"I think (today was) just frustrating for the girls, because they have been playing fairly well. They're not used to a bad night, and they all (had it) on the same night tonight."

Junior varsity

Anneliese Jetmore turned in the top score for the Jay County junior varsity team, leading to a team total of 227. Winchester did not have enough players for a JV score.

Jetmore parred the 401-yard, par-5 sixth hole to lead the Patriots, who outscored the Golden Falcon varsity team. She added five bogeys en route to a 53.

Brittany Stevens, Katie Garlinger and Megan Price all shot career-best scores of 55, 59 and 65 respectively. Alex Bunch rounded out the JCHS team score with a 60.
