Patriots up to 5th in Class 4A (01/27/2009)

INDIANAPOLIS - As the sectional tournament approaches, the Patriots continue their climb.

Jay County's girls basketball team continued its climb in the Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association Class 4A poll this week, earning the No. 5 ranking in the poll released Monday.

The Patriots (16-0) earned 75 poll points, 30 fewer than No. 4 Hamilton Southeastern (16-1) and four more than No. 6 Fishers (16-2). They were ranked sixth last week.

In its effort for a perfect regular season, Jay County's final three opponents - Richmond (tonight), Anderson and Delta - have a combined record of just 12-38.

JCHS ranks among the best teams in Class 4A in both defensive average (third - 36.9) and average margin of victory (fifth - 23.25). It is ranked seven in the state overall in the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association Poll and eighth in the Sagarin Ratings.

Chiefs crush Wilson

MUNCIE - East Jay Middle School's girls basketball team rolled out to a 10-0 lead in the opening period and cruised to a 38-10 victory Monday over host Muncie Wilson.

Amber Huelskamp, Hannah Ainsworth and Rachelle Jackson each scored six points for the undefeated Chiefs (11-0), who allowed just two field goals in the first three quarters. Emily Devoe added five points.

Tribe splits pair

FORT RECOVERY - Chelsea Pottkotter led the Fort Recovery Middle School eighth grade girls basketball team to a 40-14 win Monday over Union City Westside. The seventh grade Indians lost, 17-10.

Pottkotter powered the FRMS eighth graders (7-1) with 12 points and eight rebounds. Rachel Rammel added six points.

Kelsee Ontrop scored four points for the seventh graders (2-6).

EJMS pins Eagles

The East Jay Middle School wrestling team rolled to a 60-33 victory Monday over Delta.

Corey Bellis (105) recorded the fastest pin for the Chiefs, who had five in a minute or less, as he won in just 12 seconds. Other quick pins came from Brandon Poore (115), Willie Skiver (125), Brandon Ferner (152) and Cody Bellis (160).

Conner Ray (80), Jacob Schwieterman (110), Steven Strohl (120), Zach Metcalf (135) and Lucas Boyer (HWT) also had pins for East Jay.

Hunter Gillette (115), Eric Hemmelgarn (175), Logan Antrim (HWT) and Nick Spahr (HWT) won junior varsity matches.

Stars fall in 1st

South Adams Middle School's eighth grade girls basketball team lost Monday in the opening round of the Allen County Athletic Conference tournament, 51-26 to Woodlan.

Shanti Inniger scored nine points for the Starfires. Tori Smith added seven points.

East Jay wins

The East Jay Middle School sixth grade basketball teams each defeated St. Joe Monday.

The girls team stayed perfect at 4-0 with a 17-8 win, and the boys improved to 2-3 with a 36-16 victory.

Chloe Steigerwalt led the girls with six points and six rebounds. Catherine Dunn scored five points, and Breanne McIntire grabbed six boards.

Cole Guntle totaled nine points to pace the Chief boys. Nick Clemens and Zach Pryor had five points apiece.

Maddie McCormick had five points to lead the girls B team to an 11-2 victory, and David Fernandez tallied six points as the boys B team lost 30-19.

EJMS places 2nd

MONTPELIER - West Jay Middle School's eighth grade boys basketball team won its opening round game at the Montpelier Tournament Saturday 48-20 over the hosts before falling 40-37 to Adams Central in the championship.

Dylan Harris and Blake Crouch led the victory with 11 points apiece. Tyler Back added 10 points.

Back also had 16 points and 11 rebounds in the championship game.

Chase Louck added seven points for the Eagles (9-5).[[In-content Ad]]
