Patriots win in half (08/19/05)
JCHS girls soccer
The rain couldn’t spoil Jay County’s opener.
The host Patriot girls soccer team only played one half Thursday, but that was enough. It scored a pair of goals in the final three minutes of the half for a 3-1 victory over the visiting Heritage Patriots.
High school soccer games are official once at least one-half has been played.
Sophomore Tequila Guntle got the scoring rolling for Jay County (1-0) just over 15 minutes in the game. She scored the first goal of her career from the left side on a pass from Saffron Redwine for the 1-0 lead.
Heritage evened the score on a goal by Kara Wasylk seven minutes later, but Jay County grabbed the lead again in the waning moments of the half.
Junior Caitlin Dunn turned in the game-winning goal, also the first of her career, on a chip from the right side with 2:49 to go.
Senior Abby Schmiesing, who took three of Jay County’s six shots on goal, added another score on a chip from the right side with 1:33 to go.
Jay County’s other shot on goal came from sophomore Dana Horn.
The lone shot for Heritage came on the goal by Wasylk.[[In-content Ad]]
