Patriots win regular-season finale (10/02/2008)

DECATUR - A singles sweep gave the Jay County High School boys tennis team a 3-2 victory Wednesday over the host Bellmont Braves in its final regular-season match of the year.

The Patriots (10-5) will play in the Marion sectional Friday against the winner of today's match between Madison-Grant and Mississinewa. They have gone 9-2 - the lone losses came against Connersville and Delta - since losing three of their first four matches this season.

Kyle Simmons has led the resurgence with 15 consecutive victories at No. 2 singles. He rolled over Mike Stidam of the Braves 6-3, 6-1 Wednesday. Chase Wellman (11-7) topped Henry Narmont 6-3, 6-0 at No. 3 singles, and Phil Powell (9-7) beat Austin Bergdoll 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1 singles.

Adam Horn and Jared Valentine (8-10) nearly forced a third set, but fell 6-4, 7-6 (8-6) to Derek Thien and Payton Selking at No. 1 doubles. In the No. 2 doubles match Sam Miller and Tylor Smith (3-14) lost 7-5, 6-0 to Kodee McIntosh and Matt Stidam.

Tony Schwieterman, Joe Imel, Seth Ainsworth picked up singles wins in the JCHS junior varsity team's 5-3 victory over Bellmont. The teams of Chance Fuller and Jordan McBride, and Austin Cowan and Seth Ainsworth, added doubles wins.

EJMS defeats Bears

The East Jay Middle School volleyball teams were in control Wednesday evening as they hosted the Monroe Central Golden Bears. The seventh grade squad dominated the opening game in a 25-2, 25-14 victory and the eighth graders picked up a 25-14, 25-23 win.

Katlin Petro paced the Chief seventh graders (9-1) with four kills and four aces. Bailey Weatherhead put up seven assists, and Katie Aker had two digs.

Abbey Vance totaled nine points and four digs for the eighth grade team (6-4), Lexie Gierhart finished with nine assists and four digs and Sam Homan had six kills and two blocks. Emily Devoe scored 10 points, and Katie Reier added five kills.

Eagle girls win

DUNKIRK - Megan Price and Miranda Gerber powered the West Jay Middle School girls cross country team to a 26-31 victory Wednesday over visiting Montpelier. The Eagle boys lost 17-46.

Price and Gerber turned in matching times of 13-minutes, 42 seconds, to finish first and second respectively. Jenna Star was fifth in 15:28, Mykala Grayson took sixth at 15:52 and Lynsay Buckland finished 15th in 18:16.

Keegan Gerber posted a time of 13:33 to lead the WJMS boys in fourth place. Jordan Wood was 10th in 14:47 followed by Jesse Finnerty (12th - 15:08), Lee Mock (15th - 16:20) and Jon Lowe (17th - 17:42).[[In-content Ad]]
