Pats cruise in opener (08/18/04)

Local Roundup

Jay County’s big three juniors took a moment to get going, but just a moment.

Kurt Hess, Randy Evans and Tyler Rigby started slowly, but quickly got on track to lead the Patriot boys tennis team to a 4-1 victory over the Marion Giants Tuesday.

Hess lost his first game of the year at No. 1 singles, but cruised from there. He ran off six straight games to take the first set and won the second easily to take the match over Tyler Edmonds 6-1, 6-2.

Evans and Rigby, Jay County’s No. 1 doubles pair, also stumbled early before rolling to their win. They took the first set 6-2, and shut out Kyle Carter and Jordan Shanks in the second for a 6-2, 6-0 victory.

Adam Arnold and Travis Smith completed the doubles sweep in dominating fashion, blanking Kevin Aaron and Ryan Wright 6-0, 6-0. Todd McCowan topped Michael Baldridge 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3 singles, while Jeff Sims dropped a 7-6 (7-3), 6-2 decision to Ryan Newton.

Jay County also took all three junior varsity matches.

Thomas McCowan knocked off Kip Kershner 6-4, 6-2, James Heare beat John Siler 6-2, 6-3 and Jason Crouch topped Chas Fields 6-0, 6-1.

The Patriots will return to action Thursday at Norwell at 4:30 p.m.

Stars even record

The South Adams volleyball team bounced back quickly from an opening match loss to Norwell with a 25-18, 25-21, 10-25, 26-24 victory over the Leo Lions Tuesday.

The Starfires (1-1, 1-0 Allen County Athletic Conference), who lost in three games to Norwell Monday, were much improved offensively. Robyn Habegger and Renee Neuenschwander shared a team high with eight kills apiece, and Kara Ross added seven.

Habegger racked up five aces and 16 digs, and Neuenschwander had 11 digs to go along with one ace. Alyssa Miller dished out 25 assists, and Brooke Fox and Ross each notched three blocks.

The South Adams junior varsity team dropped to 0-2 with a 25-14, 25-13 loss to Leo.

The Starfires are off until Saturday when they will play in the North Miami Invitational at 9 a.m.

Jay blasts Golden Bears

Sophomore Luke McClung was one of three Jay County boys soccer players to finish with three or more points as the Patriots opened the 2004 season with a 10-1 destruction of the Monroe Central Bearcats Tuesday.

McClung scored the second goal of the game — at the 23:40 mark, three minutes after Chad Keen got the first score — and then started distributing the ball.

He assisted on each of Jay County’s next three goals, passing to Nick May and Josh Thornburg to give the Patriots a 4-0 lead at halftime. He dished off to Trent Bailey on the first goal of the second half for his third assist and fourth point of the game.

Keen assisted on McClung’s goal, and scored the second goal of the second half to give himself three points. Bailey would score a second time in the second half, and then assist on Ryan Wellman’s goal to give him three points.

Thornburg also had a pair of goals in the contest.

Bailey spent the first half in goal, saving the only shot that came his way. Derek Mills had two saves in three chances in the second half.

Jay County will visit Noblesville Thursday at 5 p.m.[[In-content Ad]]
